Summer can mean a lot of things. Whether it’s grilling out, getting ice cream, or bonfires, there is always something for everyone. For some, summer means time for boating 🛥️ But before you head out on the water, there are some important safety tips you should remember.

🛟 Before Getting on the Water

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources suggests that boaters take a safety educational course. This will allow those who are operating the boat to properly learn the basics.

Make sure to check the state of your life vests. You and all passengers should be safely and securely fastened in a life vest while on a boat.

🌊 While on the Water

It is illegal, like with any vehicle, to drive while intoxicated. Make sure to monitor your alcohol consumption and be responsible.

Do not operate a boat with a person riding on the bow, deck, or gunwale. This can be very dangerous for the passengers.

Make sure to not obstruct navigation of other vessels. This is illegal and is dangerous for you and other vessels around you.

⚓ After Getting off the Water

Make sure to dispose of any garbage that accumulated while you were on the boat. Remove all plants and animals from the outside of the boat in an effort to prevent aquatic invasive species. Furthermore, make sure to drain all water from the boat and equipment.

This is just a brief overlook at major rules and regulations when it comes to boating in Wisconsin. For more information, check out the full handbook.
