📝 Willy Street Fair is coming
September 14, 2023
Good morning, Madison!
A bit of news from me: I’m going on vacation!
This might not seem like a lot but it’s a pretty big deal because in the past, if I wasn’t around, there simply wouldn’t be a newsletter. But now that Madison Minutes is part of the City Cast family, there’s a whole team of kickass people around to support us when we need it.
Tomorrow you’ll meet Adrian González, one of the amazing editors at City Cast and all-around very cool dude. He’ll be filling in for me while I’m away (so play nice!).
In the meantime, I hope you all have a lovely weekend and if you need me, I’ll be deep in the pits of Riot Fest.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 Expanding CARES Service
- Starting Sept. 16, the Madison CARES will respond to non-violent behavioral health emergencies on the weekends. [City of Madison]
- What’s CARES? Madison’s Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES) program is a mobile crisis response unit that responds to community behavioral health emergencies that don’t require an armed police response. [CARES]
- Since its inception in 2021, the team has responded to over 3,200 calls for service. Over the years, demand for CARES has increased across Madison and the city used a data-based approach to identify weekend service as the most-urgent need for service.
💜 Supporting a Survivor
- Content warning: This story includes references to sexual assault. Please take care while reading.
- A UW-Madison student is on a long road to recovery following a sexual assault downtown earlier this month. To help them in the healing process, RCC Sexual Violence Resource Center (RCC formerly Rape Crisis Center) has started a GoFundMe to benefit the survivor and their family. [GoFundMe]
- Some context: Madison Police arrested a suspect in connection with the attack last week. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested on first-degree sexual assault, first-degree reckless injury, and strangulation charges. He was ordered to be held on $1 million bail. [Wisconsin State Journal]
🍗 A New Home for David's Jamaican Cuisine
- The restaurant at 5696 Monona Drive has been closed for about a month as its owner prepares to move (not too far!) to a new location at 1006 E. Broadway. The new spot won’t have a weekday lunch buffet or Friday night buffet, but you can still expect to find the familiar menu favorites like jerk chicken, pork, and tofu. [Wisconsin State Journal]
🥖 Your Lunchtime Read: Madison Sourdough union contract only seen ‘tiny bites of progress’
- As negotiations continue to stall, workers filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge, accusing management of not bargaining in good faith. [Tone Madison]

Today on City Cast

Meet Madison’s ‘Food Doula’
Qwantese Winters is many things: doula, artist, agriculturist, TV host.
When she’s not hosting “Let’s Grow Stuff” on PBS Wisconsin, she’s teaching people all over Madison how to grow and use herbs and vegetables in hands-on workshops… at the library! She’s the Madison Public Library’s Naturalist in Residence for September. With DIY workshops on making digestive bitters and herbal teas, among other things, she’s teaching many ways that food – and a connection to nature – can be healing.
Join us every Thursday as we explore Madison's food culture, from the brewers and bakers to the chefs and cheesemakers.
Thanks to City Cast editor Molly Stentz.
