📝 Abortion services return next week
September 15, 2023
Hey, there!
It’s City Cast editor Adrian González filling in for Hayley. About me: I do love long walks on the beach, but only if I can drink sour beer and I don’t have to talk to anyone. But enough about me.
I want to congratulate the City Cast Madison team for taking the best local podcast in this year’s Best of Madison awards! 🏆

And thanks to all of you who voted Madison Minutes your favorite local news website!

What's CITY Talking About?

⚕️ Abortion Services to Resume Next Week
- Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced yesterday that it will resume abortion services at two of its clinics beginning September 18. [Wisconsin Public Radio]
- The nonprofit organization halted abortion services after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, citing fear of prosecution because of an 1849 Wisconsin abortion-ban law that was never taken off the books. A Dane County judge recently ruled that the law did not prohibit consentual abortion care.
- Along with Roe v. Wade, recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court have made our state court even more important. [City Cast Madison 🎧]
🧑⚖️ Cheating the System
- Dane County drywall contractor Gustavo Reyes has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for failing to pay $557,907 in back taxes and misclassifying employees as independent contractors.
- What is worker misclassification? The IRS looks at several factors to determine whether a worker is an employee or contractor, including who controls the work and provides the tools. Claiming an employee as a contractor can help employers avoid paying necessary taxes.
- Why this matters: Misclassified workers risk not being covered by worker’s compensation or unemployment insurance, among other benefits.
- According to Rebecca Meier-Rao of Worker Justice Wisconsin, worker misclassification is quite common in the construction industry. [Wisconsin Examiner]
📺 Anti-CRT Ad Uses Teacher’s Video Without Permission
- Milwaukee Public School teacher Angela Harris, who teaches at Martin Luther King, Junior school, says she is considering a lawsuit against the organization Be Good To Kids after they used a portion of a video she posted to social media in an anti-critical race theory advertisement without her permission. The ad aired during Sunday’s Packers game against the Chicago Bears and will continue to run in the future. [Madison 365]
- The ad fails to define the educational concepts of CRT, but claims that it “wants to end” racial equality.
- Harris could have a difficult case — under fair use laws, a video can be used for the purposes of education, commentary, criticism or parody.
- Hear Angela Harris speak about the experience, including getting doxxed. [WORT FM]
🗳️ Top Election Official Gets Canned
- The Republican-majority Senate voted along party lines yesterday to fire Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe. Democrats argue that the vote itself was not legally before the chamber and should not have occurred in the first place. [Wisconsin State Journal]
- The commission appointed Wolfe in 2018 and she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2019, but has been under scrutiny from Republicans since 2020, much of which has been fueled by false election fraud claims by former president Donald Trump.
