September 21, 2023
Good morning, friends!
Have you ever had a question about Madison you were too afraid or embarrassed to ask? Like, what exactly counts as “The Isthmus”? Or Why is our city bird a plastic pink flamingo? (True story!)
Well, I’m here to help.
Fill out this form and tell me what Madison quirks I should dig into.

What's CITY Talking About?

🛝 Madison’s Newest Accessible Playground is Now Open
- The playground at Rennebohm Park is officially open, making it Madison’s fourth accessible playground. The fully ramp-connected main play structure features sign language, musical notes, and Braille communication boards. Of course, there are also plenty of opportunities for climbing, sliding, and swinging, too. The city also has plans to add a water play feature to the park next year.

🐷 Good News for Rudi
- Madison’s City Council voted this week to allow residents to have miniature pigs in the city.
- Why? The conversation started a few months ago when Rudi, a beloved west side mini pig, was served an eviction notice, sparking outrage among neighborhood residents. [Madison Magazine]
- Under the new guidelines, Madison residents can have one pig as a pet as long as it’s 24 inches tall or less at the shoulder, weighs less than 300 pounds, is up to date on shots, and is microchipped.
- “Many of the myths and misperceptions about pigs have been addressed," District 13 Ald. Tag Evers said of the ordinance change. "There are times where we can do the easy thing and spread a little joy in our city." [Wisconsin State Journal]
🎂 Madison Senior Center’s 40th Anniversary
- The Madison Senior Center is celebrating 40 years of service. The downtown building opened in 1983 and was the first in the city designed to serve the needs of Madison’s older generations.
- Join the fun: The city is hosting a celebration today to honor the occasion. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and will feature music, live performances, art, and more.
🍼 Your Lunchtime Read: Wisconsin’s Black infants have some of the country’s highest mortality rates. These solutions could help.
- “Research, including at the University of Wisconsin, has highlighted societal factors — including stress caused by poverty and racism — as major causes of negative outcomes for Black babies. Wisconsin is home to outsized Black-white disparities across society, including in education, wealth, health, housing and the justice system.” [Wisconsin Watch]
