📝 How to get free Covid-19 tests
September 22, 2023
Happy Friday, Madison!
UW-Madison homecoming is right around the corner. That means parades, seas of red-and-white-clad students, and, of course, football.
This made me wonder — where's your go-to spot to watch the Badgers play? Perhaps it’s a local bar? Or one of the unions? Maybe you’re a diehard fan with season tickets?
And if you're not into sports, where do you go to get away from the chaos of game days? (Personally, I love hiding from the crowds at Picnic Point.)

What's CITY Talking About?

😷 Free Covid-19 Tests are Back
- Starting Sept. 25 every U.S. household can place an order to receive four free Covid-19 test kits from the federal government. If you have old tests, don’t toss them just yet! Most diagnostic tests have had their expiration dates extended. You can check your tests here. [FDA]

👋 Eastsiders, meet your alders
- The alders representing Madison’s east side Districts 3, 15, 16, and 17 are hosting a meet and greet Saturday, Sept. 23 at the capitol. The "Let's Bus to the Farmer's Market" event is an opportunity to interact with some of Madison’s decision makers and browse the Dane County Farmers’ Market. A real win-win! [City of Madison]
🥗 Madison’s First Sweetgreen
- The popular bowl and salad restaurant chain has opened its first location in Madison. Sweetgreen is located at 652 State St. across from Poke Plus Madison and Forage Kitchen, a locally owned salad-based chain. The new restaurant will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. [Madison Magazine]
🥁 Your Lunchtime Listen: The Most Sampled Drummer Lived in Madison. Why Don’t You Know His Name?
- Clyde Stubblefield was best known as James Brown’s drummer and came up with iconic backbeats that changed the course of music. But he wasn’t credited or compensated for his musical innovation and faced mounting medical debts later in life. He was a celebrated musician in Madison, where he lived and gigged for decades. City Cast Madison has the full story.
- Join the fun: This Sunday, the Majestic is hosting an exclusive screening of the documentary on Stubblefield called “Give the Drummer Some”. And as a bonus, City Cast Madison podcast host Bianca Martin will moderate a Q&A with the film’s director. Be there or be square!

Friday Floof

We’ve made it through the week! Here’s a little sweet treat: Meet Ruby and Esso. These two are happiest when their neck fur is wet with each other’s slobber, according to their human Jenna S. Ruby and Esso true BFFs. You can usually spot the two bounding side by side down a trail, skillfully chewing on the same tennis ball, or snuggling in one dog bed.
