📝 Plan your fall getaway

September 26, 2023

Good morning, Madison!

I hope you’re in the autumnal spirit because this week we’re running a multi-part series on fall getaways in this newsletter and on the City Cast Madison podcast.

Today, we’re sharing some of our favorite drives for catching exquisite fall colors. On Wednesday, we’ll give you a sneak peek behind the scenes of our favorite local corn maze. And Thursday, we’ll round up the best local apple orchards to visit around Madison.

Now, who has some cider? 🍎 🍂

🥖 Nature’s Bakery Cooperative Has Closed

  • After decades of serving the Madison community, Nature’s Bakery Cooperative has sold its building at 1019 Williamson St. and permanently closed. The bakery first opened on Willy Street in the 1970s where Mother Fool’s Coffee House is currently located.

💎 A New Home for the Willy Street Treasure Shop (Again)

  • This is the third move in nine years for the Willy Street Treasure Shop, which is currently located at 1370 Williamson St. Next month, the shop will relocate up the street to 1236 Williamson St., the former home of Red Clover Tattoo Collective. [Wisconsin State Journal]
  • The shop, which sells eclectic art, jewelry, home décor, and more, will have a soft opening for the new location Oct. 2.

🦩 Flamingos in Wisconsin?

  • Over the weekend, birders from across the state flocked to Port Washington beach after five pink flamingos were spotted on the shores of Lake Michigan.
  • How did they get here? The birds are typically found in the Bahamas or Cuba (and sometimes Florida). But American Flamingos have been spotted across a dozen states like Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania recently after Hurricane Idalia passed through in August. Biologists say the hurricane likely pushed the birds off course. [WPR]

Happy Take Me Home Tuesday!

She is beauty, she is Gracie! This 8 month old puppy is looking for a new family to call her own. Gracie, 35 pounds, is a sweet girl who is still learning to find her confidence. She’s hoping to find someone who is ready to show her that new people and places can be fun to explore, and to learn how to be brave.

If you think she might be the right pup for you, call the Adoption Center before visiting the shelter. Gracie is currently staying with a foster family, so the humane society will arrange a time for you to meet her.
