📝 Happy Birthday, Bucky!
October 2, 2023
Happy Monday, y’all!
It’s officially homecoming week for UW-Madison. That means parades, football games, and more red and white striped clothing items than ever before.
In celebration of the occasion, I’ve decided to sprinkle some Badger spice into this week’s emails. I’ll start by telling you about the king himself, Buckingham U. Badger (fun fact: today is his official birthday!).
Don’t forget, I’m looking for your go-to game day spots. Here’s your last chance to share your tips.

What's CITY Talking About?

🇺🇸 The VP is Coming to Madison
- Vice President Kamala Harris will be in town this week as part of the month-long “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour.” The VP will make a stop at UW-Madison Oct. 4 to discuss topics including gun safety, reproductive freedom, climate action, and LGBTQ+ rights. [The Daily Cardinal]
- The bigger picture: Wisconsin is expected to be a critical battleground state in the 2024 presidential election. The vice president’s visit marks the Biden administration’s fourth trip to the state this election season. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
🍻 Alt Brew is Expanding
- Madison-based brewery Alt Brew has been struggling to keep up with demand for its gluten-free beer since it got its start in 2013, and demand has only gotten stronger. Now, the brewery’s owners are funding a $400,000 expansion project that will increase its output by nearly 10 times its current capacity. [Isthmus]
🦌 Test for CWD
- As deer hunting season approaches, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging hunters to test any deer they kill for chronic wasting disease before consuming it. CWD is a fatal infectious disease that occurs in members of the cervid or deer family. Though there isn’t much evidence to suggest it can infect humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advises against eating infected meat. [DNR]
- Deer can appear healthy for months after they've been infected with CWD, so testing is important regardless of the deer's physical condition when hunted. [Channel 3000]

Madison's Guide to Legal Weed
Illinois, Michigan, and recently Minnesota have all legalized recreational cannabis. Efforts to do so in Wisconsin have gone nowhere in the state Legislature. Even so, Madison is seeing an increasing number of stores selling CBD, Delta-8 THC, and other legal cannabinoids — some of which produce the same euphoric high as the recreational weed that’s illegal in our state.
We spoke with Alan Robinson, cannabis activist and co-founder of Herbal Aspects, to help us understand this confusing state of affairs.
