📝 JK on the VP

October 3, 2023

Good morning, Madison!

Looks like the VP had to reschedule on us.

In case you missed it, Vice President Kamala Harris was set to visit Madison this week as part of the month-long “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour.” But in the wake of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s death, Harris will instead travel to her home state for funeral services.

The Madison visit is expected to be rescheduled, so keep your eyes peeled for future motorcades!

What's CITY Talking About?

🧸 Red Caboose’s New Home

  • One of Madison's oldest childcare centers officially has a new home. Red Caboose recently celebrated the grand opening of its new east-side facility on Winnebago Street. The childcare center operated in their old building on Willy Street for more than 50 years. The new facility can serve three times the amount of kids as its old spot. [Cap Times]

🍸 Coming Soon: Northside Lounge

  • A longtime bartender at Vintage Spirits & Grill is venturing off on his own to open Northside Lounge on Sherman Avenue in 2024. The new spot will have an Art Deco theme and a patio. The lounge’s owner emphasized inclusivity as one of its core values, noting that the bar, bathrooms, and patio will all be accessible. [Cap Times]

What Books Are Being Challenged in Dane County

Librarians are worried. The American Library Association has been compiling data about censorship in libraries for the past 20 years and says attempts to ban books are at an all time high.

Dane County Library Service director Tracy Herold has seen it happen here. Today’s challenges look less like a demand for an outright ban from a single group, and more like anonymous social media chatter stirring up controversy about a library, its staff and its books.
