📝 Native art market this weekend

October 6, 2023

Good morning, Madison!

It’s Friday, are you going out tonight?

More and more, young people are choosing to forego alcohol but that doesn’t mean they’re not at the bars. The non-alcoholic beverage market surpassed $11 billion in 2022 and local watering holes are getting in on the trend.

I’m putting together a list of Madison’s best spots for mocktails and need your help — where can a gal get a non-alcoholic drink around here?

One quick note of housekeeping: No newsletter on Monday in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day. Have a lovely weekend.

🍃 Gather Thy Fall Leaves and Yard Waste

  • What’s yard waste? Yard waste includes items like leaves, weeds, grass and garden trimmings, pumpkins, and pine cones. It’s different from brush, which is typically woody material cut from a tree.
  • Related: Leaf-free streets lead to cleaner lakes. Here’s how. [Madison Minutes]

🎨 Check Out the Fall Native Art Market

  • In celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day Oct. 9, the Arts + Literature Laboratory on the east side will host a Fall Native Art Market this weekend. The market will feature more than 20 artists who will share and sell their work and host artist workshops.
  • The details: The market runs Oct. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. [ALL]

🏛️ Gunman at the Capitol

  • A man was arrested after he illegally brought a loaded handgun into the Wisconsin State Capitol building Wednesday demanding to see Gov. Tony Evers, and returned that night with an assault rifle after posting bail. The 43-year-old man was arrested again shortly after his return to the Capitol. [AP]
  • It’s illegal to openly carry firearms in the Capitol but concealed weapons are allowed if the carrier has a valid permit.

🎓 Your Weekend Read: UW System faculty fear for the future of Wisconsin higher ed

  • “The signs are grim: Cuts to UW System’s funding, staff furloughs and layoffs, pay raises held hostage, campuses hemorrhaging millions of dollars. It all stems from a long-standing political battle, which threatens to dramatically change the state’s higher ed system if it continues on the current track, [University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Jon] Shelton said.” [Cap Times]

Friday Floof

Oliver is a short-haired orange cat with bright eyes and long whiskers.
Once just an orange boy lost in a field, now Oliver lives a life full of love and happiness.

Congratulations on making it through the week, here’s your reward! Meet Oliver. This sweet orange boy has come a long way after being found abandoned in a field. This sweet boy now enjoys a happy life full of naps in sunbeams, endless toys, and lots of treats. Oliver's favorite activity is curling up with a good book, according to his human Sara L. Or rather, curling up next to Sara pretending to read a good book.

Do you have a pet to share with the Madison Minutes family? I want to see them!

Lawmakers Threaten to Impeach Elections Official and County Exec Retires

The City Cast Madison team is here to round up the news of the week. And this week’s theme is executive power. Dylan Brogan and Molly Stentz reflect on Dane County Executive Joe Parisi’s legacy. After more than a dozen years at the helm of Wisconsin’s second largest county, he’s announced he’ll retire in May. And we examine the attempt to impeach the head of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, Meagan Wolfe.
