📝 Republicans want to criminalize public nudity

October 10, 2023

Happy Tuesday, Madison!

Today is world mental health day. As a certified Depressed Person — shoutout to anyone taking an SSRI! —  I know the importance of having a good cry. But sometimes, we don’t get to choose where or when that cry happens.

So once again, I’m turning to you for suggestions — where are the best places to cry in Madison? (Personally, I’m a fan of the Mister Car Wash on East Washington Ave.)

What's CITY Talking About?

Naked cyclists ride through Central London during The World Naked Bike Ride. The World Naked Bike Ride is a global protest movement with rides in cities around the world, raising awareness of issues such as safety of cyclists on the road, reducing oil dependence and saving the planet.

🚫 Proposed Bill Could Outlaw the World Naked Bike Ride

  • Republicans in the state legislature have introduced laws that would make being naked in public a crime. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
  • Why? The issue arose after local law enforcement decided that an underage person’s photographed participation in Madison’s Naked Bike Ride didn’t break any laws. Madison Police determined state laws related to child pornography were not relevant to the case and closed it. Still, Republicans have chosen to take up the matter. [Cap Times]

There's a $2M Pipe Organ in Madison and You Should Hear It

There’s a giant among us and it lives at the Overture Center for the Arts. It’s a 30-ton pipe organ. It costs more than two million dollars, contains more than 4,000 pipes, and is used in performances ranging from Latin Jazz to Bach to collaborations with the UW-Madison Wind Ensemble.

The man who knows it best is Greg Zelek, the principal organist for the Madison Symphony Orchestra. If you caught Greg’s performance last Friday, you’ll want to learn more about why he’s so moved by organ music.
