📝 Deadly east side shooting
October 12, 2023
Good morning, Madison!
The leaves are falling and the city has a hot tip to help you avoid spending hours with a rake: mulching.
Mulching leaves by mowing them into your yard is a great way to not only keep leaves out the the streets, but to help feed the trees and plants in your yard.
Remember: Leaf-free streets in the fall lead to cleaner lakes in the summer!

What's CITY Talking About?

🚨 Deadly East Side Shooting
- The Madison Police Department is investigating a shooting that left multiple teens injured and one dead at the Harmony Apartments on Milwaukee St. Police say an SUV pulled into the area Tuesday night and began "indiscriminately firing round after round, not caring for who or what they may strike." [MPD]
- Police don’t believe the shooting to be a targeted event and called it a “cowardly act of violence.” The victims have not yet been identified, but police say a 15-year-old girl died. Madison Schools confirmed she was a sophomore at East High School. [Channel 3000]
- The bigger picture: The apartment complex where the shooting happened was declared a public nuisance in 2020, just one year after it opened. But that label was removed in 2021 after its property managers made changes to improve the conditions. This is the second deadly shooting at the complex this year and the city’s 10th homicide of 2023. [Wisconsin State Journal]
❤️🩹 A Community Leader’s Ask for Help
- Longtime Madison community leader and the current chair of the city’s Police Civilian Oversight Board Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores is looking for help after she survived a drive-by shooting on Willy Street earlier this month. [City of Madison, MPD]
- Kilfoy-Flores explained in a GoFundMe that she was driving home from dinner when a large black vehicle pulled up beside her on Willy Street trying to pass her and when she turned left onto Few Street, someone in the vehicle began shooting. No one was hurt but her car was totaled and the Social Justice Center on the corner of the 1200 block of Williamson St. was damaged as a result of the shooting. [GoFundMe, Madison365]
📚 MMSD’s Enrollment Surprise
- For the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, enrollment has increased for the Madison Metropolitan School District. Despite expecting to see a decrease, MMSD grades K-12 saw an increase of 62 students from last year. [Cap Times]
- While many administrators are happy to see higher enrollment numbers for their financial implications — more students means more money for the district — some teachers and students have recently sounded off about class sizes that have grown too large. Educators have called upon the district to re-evaluate its class size policies. [Wisconsin State Journal]
💉 Free STI Testing at Mercadito
- Centro Hispano is partnering with the OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center and Vivent Health to provide STI and HIV testing for free at its weekly Thursday market, El Mercadito. [Madison365]
- Mercadito runs from 5-7 p.m. at Centro’s main office at 801 W. Badger Rd. The weekly market was created as a place where members of Madison’s Southside community can “share their cultural heritage and culinary traditions.” [Centro Hispano]

The Restaurant Preserving Wisconsin’s Dairy Legacy
Seven Acre Dairy is many things — a cafe, a restaurant, a hotel, a butter plant.
But if you talk to founder Nic Mink, it’s also a place for restoration. He renovated a shuttered old butter plant in Paoli, a small community about twenty minutes from downtown Madison. It’s drawing neighbors near and far to enjoy locally-made butter, soft serve ice cream, and a farm-to-table restaurant.
