📝 How to see the eclipse

October 13, 2023

Good morning, Madison!

And happy Friday the 13th.

Did you know there’s going to be a partial solar eclipse this weekend?

I and the rest of the City Cast Madison team have all the details on that (and more!) in today’s podcast. Be sure to check it out if you need any further proof that I am not just an email robot and do in fact exist in the real world.

I’m still new to the wide world of podcasting but if you like the show (or if you don’t!) I’d love your feedback.

What's CITY Talking About?

📉 Layoffs at AmFam

  • Madison-based American Family Insurance has confirmed layoffs across its five U.S. companies. The company, which employs more than 10,000 people, has not said how many or which positions have been affected. [Wisconsin State Journal]

🎥 Check Out the Midwest Video Poetry Fest

  • This weekend, the Arts + Literature Laboratory will host the fourth annual Midwest Video Poetry Fest. The two-day event features dozens of narrative, documentary, and experimental short films from interdisciplinary artists. [Tone Madison]
  • The details: The festival will take place Oct. 14-15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door.

🎨 Celebrating Native Culture

  • Madison’s public libraries will host a variety of Native artists, storytellers, and community leaders for a series of programs celebrating Wisconsin’s Indigenous people.
  • The Teejop & Beyond program runs through December and will cover a range of topics including identity, mental health, growing up Native in Wisconsin, climate solutions, and more. Participants will get the chance to try hands-on crafts like beading, basket-weaving, and quillwork. [Madison Public Library]

🏘️ Your Lunchtime Read: Mobile homes are affordable but some residents find serious downsides.

  • “Modern manufactured homes, which sometimes come with large windows, stone fireplaces, hardwood floors and even wraparound decks, are one of the few remaining sources of affordable housing in the region and can fill a gap for those looking to own homes. But they also come with a host of challenges: Property managers often are limited on budgets to provide anything other than minimal maintenance, and rents can be exploited by out-of-state investors to make money off of vulnerable populations.” [Cap Times]

Friday Floof

Paul is medium-sized chestnut colored dog. He stares at the camera with big eyes.
Paul was three months old when he was adopted but he’s all grown up now!

We’ve made it to another Friday and it’s been a particularly heavy week in the Madison community and beyond. Here’s something to smile about going into this weekend. Meet Paul. This sweet boy was adopted five years ago from Brown Paws Rescue in Waunakee. Paul is a certified Good Boy who loves to run, play tug-of-war, and climb on trees and furniture like a cat.

Do you have a pet to share with the Madison Minutes community? I want to meet them!
