Happy Monday, Madison!

Here’s a fun slice of the internet I recently stumbled upon — a Canadian artist drew a wildly intricate and detailed map of Madison that’s full of fun Easter eggs. Check it out and let me know if you spot any hidden messages.

⚖️ Anti-Transgender Rights Bills Pass in Legislature

  • Last week Republicans in the state house passed three bills targeting the rights of transgender youth in Wisconsin. [Cap Times]
  • Two of the bills center around prohibiting transgender high school and college athletes from competing on sports teams that align with their gender identities. The third piece of legislation bans gender-affirming health care for transgender youth under 18.
  • The public hearings and floor debates for the bills drew heated discussion from community members and legislators alike. All three bills were referred to the Senate but no matter the outcome, Gov. Tony Evers has vowed to veto any legislation that restricts the rights of LGBTQ+ residents. [Wisconsin Watch]

🦃 Thanksgiving Already?

  • Registration for the Goodman Center’s annual Thanksgiving basket drive opens today. For the past 35 years, the local nonprofit has donated thousands of Thanksgiving baskets full of everything needed to prepare a traditional holiday meal to families in need. This year, the organization hopes to distribute 4,000 baskets to more than 25,000 Dane County residents. [Goodman Community Center]

📚 A New Home For The Book Deal

  • The local independent bookstore recently moved to a new location at 3822 Mineral Point Road. The Book Deal was founded in 2018 to help foster literacy in Madison through affordable and free access to books. The new location offers two levels of new and used books ripe for the reading! Why Madison’s Crisis Response Team Is Working

Madison started the CARES, or Community Alternative Response Emergency Services, program in 2021 after a wave of protests and a series of deaths. Paramedics and crisis workers now respond to non-violent 911 calls in Madison, rather than police officers.

Two years and thousands of calls later, the program seems to be working. But it’s not staffed on nights and weekends and it’s only available within city limits. This could change under proposals before the Madison City Council and the Dane County Board.

Host Bianca Martin caught up with Madison Assistant Fire Chief Ché Stedman to learn how it all works.
