What's CITY Talking About?

📢 UW Students Stage a Walkout

  • Roughly 100 UW-Madison students walked out of classes Wednesday afternoon in protest of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the university’s reaction to world events. The students called for a boycott, divestment, and sanction (BDS) from Israel, and demanded the university provide protection for students who participate in protests and transparency when it comes to how the school spends tuition money. • “If I’m paying tuition to the school, I’m not going to also pay for my grandmother to get expelled from her house or even killed,” the president of Students for Justice in Palestine said.

💰 Final Approval Given for New Wisconsin History Center

  • The State Building Commission gave the final seal of approval for the long-awaited new Historical Society Museum. The new $160.5 million, 100,000-square-foot History Center will have three permanent galleries, a rotating community gallery sharing history from across the state, and another changing gallery to draw traveling exhibits. • While the Historical Society awaits its new building, the organization is currently operating a temporary History Maker Space and retail store, located in the US Bank Plaza building. [NBC15]
  • Demolition and construction for the new building are expected to begin in early 2024.

🏃‍♂️ Verona Man on the Run (Literally)

  • Jon Noll is a 38-year-old Epic employee and ultramarathoner. He recently competed in the Backyard Ultra World Championship where he earned seventh place by running for 98 consecutive hours. In total, he ran roughly 408 miles. What powered his run? While other athletes had teams that cooked them full meals while the race went on, Noll fueled himself with pizza, sandwiches, and gummy worms. [Wisconsin State Journal]

🐮 Your Lunchtime Read: Dairy Workers on Wisconsin’s Small Farms Are Dying. Many of Those Deaths Are Never Investigated.

  • “OSHA sometimes investigates deaths on small farms if they provide housing to immigrant workers. Other times the agency says it can’t take action.” [ProPublica]

Happy Friday, friends! This week’s floof is a very special one because he has been a supporter of Madison Minutes since pretty close to day one. Meet Cooper (and Milo)! Don’t let this boy’s fluffiness fool you, he’s a tiny lad with a big personality. Cooper loves to cuddle and will rub his face all over yours to show affection. He is inseparable from his little brother, Milo, a chatty, aloof black cat with a hilarious personality.
