What's CITY Talking About?

Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge recently opened at 617 N. Sherman Ave. (Hayley Sperling / City Cast Madison)

🍸 Meet Lola’s

  • The north side’s newest hangout is officially open. Lola’s Hi/Lo Dining Room and Cocktail Lounge is the newest endeavor from Madison service industry veterans Evan Dannells of Cadre, Tori Gerding of Ancora Cafe, and her husband Matt Gerding, the former co-president of FPC Live. [Lola’s]
  • The ‘60s-inspired lounge serves “global tavern food” offering a variety of options from cracker crust pizza, noodles and dumplings, tavern baskets, and more. As a bonus, the kitchen will be open for late night food!
  • Aside from food and drinks, the lounge will also serve intimate, cozy vibes, and music from a high-fidelity sound system (otherwise known as Hi-Fi). [Cap Times]
  • Who’s Lola? The spot’s name pays homage to Lola Otto, owner and bartender of Lola’s Tomcat Lounge in St. Nazianz. Her bar served as a major inspiration for the project. [Isthmus]

🏫 Honoring the Ho-Chunk Nation at UW

  • As part of its celebration of Native November on campus, UW-Madison unveiled new Ho-Chunk banners on Bascom Hill. The three-panel banners titled “Seed by Seed” were made by UW doctoral student Molli Pauliot, who is Ho-Chunk; Marianne Fairbanks, a textile artist and an associate professor of design studies at UW; and Stephen Hilyard, a professor of digital arts in the Art Department. [Madison365]
  • The design incorporates symbols, imagery, and traditional colors of the Ho-Chunk Nation, honoring those whose ancestral land UW now occupies. The banners will hang on the front of Bascom Hall through November. Learn more about observing Native American Heritage Month in Madison later in this email!
