📝 Winter is coming, do you know where to park?

November 15, 2023

Happy Wednesday, Madison!

And happy birthday to American modernist painter Georgia O'Keeffe, who was born on this day in 1887 in none other than Sun Prairie. Now let’s paint today’s picture.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚙 Watch Where You Park

  • From Nov. 15 to March 15, Madison follows alternate-side parking rules. This means on even-numbered calendar days, drivers are required to park on the even-house-numbered side of the street from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. On odd-numbered calendar days, park on the odd-house-numbered side of the street during the same timeframe. [City Cast Madison 🎧]
  • Don’t worry: If you’re not sure where to park, the city will literally tell you. You can sign up for daily alternate side parking reminders. You’ll get a text every day at 5 p.m. telling you what side of the street to park. [City of Madison]

🚧 Major Downtown Development in the Works

  • Chicago-based developer Core Spaces gained key approvals for a 465-unit apartment complex along West Johnson Street, North Broom Street, and West Gorham Street. The four-building complex will have three 15-story buildings and one that’s eight-stories tall. Technically, those heights exceed the current limits for that area but the city approved the proposal because of its promise of affordable units. [Wisconsin State Journal]
  • The development will offer below-market-rate units for 165 beds in the 1,600-bed complex. UW-Madison's Office of Financial Aid will determine who qualifies for the lower rent based on financial need; this same system is in place at Core Space’s other massive development across the street, Oliv. This latest project is the developers’ fifth in Madison. [WKOW]

🚌 More Change Coming to Metro

  • Starting Dec. 3, Metro Transit will implement service changes to at least 18 bus routes in effort to make them more reliable. Among the changes are more trips for the east-west Route A, north-south Route B, and Route 75, which goes to the Epic campus in Verona. Additionally, 15 bus stops along the future Bus Rapid Transit corridor will close. [City of Madison]

👩‍🍳 Your Lunchtime Read: “How ‘Top Chef’ came to Dairyland”

  • “Twenty seasons in since it first aired in 2006, ‘Top Chef’ is arguably the most influential reality cooking show in the country, if not the world. [...] Tourism staff [in the state] had been planting the seeds for a Wisconsin season for well over a decade.” [Cap Times]

This Mighty Microbe Could Be Our Next State Symbol

Wisconsin’s next official state symbol could be something you can’t even see without using a microscope. Sure, the microbe Lactococcus lactis may be tiny in size but its contributions to our state’s dairy industry are huge, says the two UW Madison grad students campaigning for it to become Wisconsin’s state microbe.
