What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ The Arguments Surrounding Redistricting
- The Wisconsin Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments this week against the state’s current Republican-drawn legislative maps. The outcome of this case — filed by Democrats — will have a direct impact on the state’s political makeup. Democrats hope to have the court order new elections for all of the state’s 132 lawmakers under new maps by next fall. [WPR]
- Some context: Wisconsin’s political maps have been called “some of the most extreme partisan gerrymanders in the United States.” [City Cast Madison 🎧]
🌱 Future East Side Developments
- Live near Garver Feed Mill? The city is looking for your input on how to develop the parkland north of Garver Feed Mill, which it’s referring to as Olbrich Park - North Parcel. Make your voice heard by filling out this city survey. On Dec. 7, the city will host a virtual public meeting to go over survey results, draft plans, listen to feedback, and answer your questions. While we’re making suggestions, can someone come up with a better name for this park? [City of Madison]
🛍️ It’s Happening
- After decades of planning, fundraising, and uncertainties, the city will break ground on the public market by the end of this month. [Channel 3000]
- How we got here: The tale of the public market is one full of twists and turns. Three mayors have tried to get the project off the ground. Now it’s on track to open in 2025. [City Cast Madison 🎧]

Why Dane County Needs a New Election Center
Facing threats from election deniers, potential Russian operatives, and flooding, Dane County officials are looking to beef up local election safeguards. So they’re buying the former Ale Asylum brewery by the airport and retrofitting it to house the county’s election infrastructure.
