Good morning, Madison!

Looking for a good cup of coffee from the comfort of your own home? Local roasters JBC Coffee won Coffee Review’s #1 Coffee of 2023 in an international competition.

JBC’s award-winning Wilton Benitez Pink Bourbon brew sold out in minutes the last time it was available but the coffee makers hope to have it back in stock by the beginning of 2024.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for more good local coffee, I have some suggestions.

🥰 Meet Peru

  • The Henry Vilas Zoo recently welcomed a new resident to its family. Peru is a 4-year-old female capybara who came to Madison from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.
  • Earlier this year, the zoo’s 12-year-old female capybara Fiona died of natural causes. Since then, the zoo has been looking to find a new companion for its male capybara Morrison. The two will spend the winter months away before moving to the zoo’s he Aviary habitat when the weather warms up, which is when Peru will make her public debut.
  • Capybara facts: The capybara is the world’s largest living rodent and can weigh up to 150 lbs. The species is native to South America and its diets consist mostly of grasses and aquatic plants. [NBC15, Henry Vilas Zoo]

🧂 A Less Salty City

  • There’s snow on the ground, which means roads can be slippery. While city crews will be out plowing streets, they’re being more mindful of which roads will get salted. This year, the city plans to cut its salt use by roughly 270 tons by eliminating more than 50 miles of roads from its salt route.
  • Why? The salt that helps melt snow on our roads ends up in our lakes and drinking water, creating toxic environments for the ecosystems that thrive in freshwater. [City of Madison, WI Salt Wise]

Who’s Cyber Attacking Madison Businesses?

Kwik Trip recently confirmed it experienced a cybersecurity incident that impacted its internal communication, production facilities, and customer loyalty program. And it’s not the only business in town that’s been hit in the last couple months.
