📝 Where to see holiday lights
December 21, 2023
Good morning, Madison!
Today is the winter solstice AKA the shortest day of the year. If you’re looking to celebrate the occasion, stop by Olbrich Park for the SASY neighborhood bonfire. There will be cider and hot chocolate, donated by Willy Street Co-op and Jenifer Street Market but BYOM (bring your own mug).
If you’re not familiar with the east side neighborhood, read my guide.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚌 Next Stop, Monona?
- The Monona City Council voted this week to join the Madison Metro Transit system. Now, the city will work on contract negotiations with Madison to make it happen. The new routes are set to run by the end of next year.
- Madison buses don’t currently serve Monona and the city contracts with a commuter service to run the Monona Express, AKA its public transportation. [WORT, City of Monona]
🍰 The End of Lane’s Bakery
- Unless someone out there is planning a Hallmark-movie-worthy holiday miracle, Lane’s Bakery will close Sunday. The Lanes announced they would sell the 69-year-old family business back in February but haven’t found a buyer.
- People from across Wisconsin have been taking one last trip to the Park Street bakery recently, so if you need a kringle for Christmas, plan on getting there early because they’ve been selling out fast. [Wisconsin State Journal]
⚖️ A Dane County Judge’s Abortion Ruling is Appealed
- A Sheboygan County District Attorney has filed a notice of appeal asking Wisconsin's second district Court of Appeals to overturn a Dane County judge's recent ruling that determined Wisconsin’s 1849 law does not apply to abortion.
- Some context: The second district Court of Appeals is based in Waukesha, where three of four judges are conservatives.
- Related: Following the Dane County judge’s ruling, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced it would resume abortion services at its Sheboygan Clinic Dec. 28. [WPR]
🍝 Fabiola’s is Open for Dinner
- Fabiola’s Spaghetti House & Deli is officially open for dinner service. The restaurant serves old-school dishes that pay homage to the neighborhood’s Jewish and Italian roots. The new Greenbush restaurant is owned by the same folks who run Leopold's Books Bar Caffè next door, so you know it’s good! [Fabiola’s, Leopold’s]

The Family Recipes Behind This Local Laotian Spot
Nothing says holidays like family and food, and Ahan, a local Laotian spot, has both. We sat down with the restaurant’s co-owner and chef, James Beard Semifinalist Jaime Brown-Soukaseume, to ask about her expansion to Williamson’s Street, which of her mother’s recipes made it to the menu, and even the secret ingredient behind the Laotian cuisine.
