Good morning, Madison!
Is everyone enjoying the snow? Personally, I love cozying up with my cats to stare out the window and watch the fluttering fluffy flakes hit the ground. If you’re looking for a place of your own to get cozy (sans felines, sorry) I’ve got you covered.

What's CITY Talking About?

❄️ It’s a Snow Emergency
- The city has declared a snow emergency. That means alternate side parking rules are in effect for all of Madison. So for tonight, park in front of odd-numbered houses between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. But If you can, try to find off-street parking during this time.
- Hot tip: During a declared snow emergency you can park at city ramps from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. for free. But remember, if parking overnight, don’t use the top level so it can be plowed. And if you ever forget which side of the street to park on, you can just ask the city. [City of Madison, Madison Minutes]
🍻 The End of an Era
- A closing date has been set for one of Madison’s oldest bars — the Silver Dollar Tavern will pour its last drink Feb. 3. The bar at 117 W. Mifflin St. opened in 1933, shortly after Prohibition was lifted. The bar has operated from 8 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. throughout its history and has become a beloved institution for many downtown service industry workers and students alike. The owners do not have plans to reopen the bar elsewhere.
- Hovde Properties is set to take over the building Feb. 20 as part of its larger plan to redevelop the entire downtown block.

🎨 Prettier Streets Are Safer Streets
- As part of its Vision Zero initiative, the city will pilot a program to bring more murals, colorful crosswalks, and painted overpasses to Madison.
- Why? A 2022 report from Bloomberg Philanthropies showed so-called “asphalt art” made busy streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The study found that in areas where art was installed, car crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists dropped by 50% and crashes leading to injuries decreased by 37%.
- The city has allocated $69,000 to the project, which will cover artist’s fee, installation, and community engagement. Locations for the art will be proposed in the coming months. [Madison Minutes, Bloomberg, WORT]
📽️ Looking For a Movie?
- Mark your calendars because UW-Madison’s Cinematheque returns Jan. 25. The free cinematic showcase is put on by UW academic departments and student film groups. It hosts screenings of some of the best in international cinema and historic films that would otherwise never reach Madison screens.
- The details: Films are hosted most Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (with the occasional Sunday showing) through May 4 at 4070 Vilas Hall. You can check out the whole lineup here. [Tone Madison, Cinematheque]

A Civil Rights Legend Will Be In Madison This MLK Day
With Martin Luther King Jr. Day right around the corner, Madison has a host of events lined up to commemorate the civil rights activist, including a special keynote address from one of the Little Rock Nine — Terrence Roberts. Roberts helped integrate public schools in the U.S. by volunteering to be one of the first Black high school students to attend an all-white school in 1957, following the U.S. Supreme Court decision outlawing segregation.
