📝 Silver Dollar’s legacy lives on

January 19, 2024

Happy Friday, Madison!

In case you missed it, I’m rounding up some of the city’s best date spots in celebration of the Hallmark holiday on the horizon (AKA Valentines Day).

So far, your suggestions have included hikes at Devil’s Lake, adventures on Willy Street, and of course, taking in the views at Memorial Union Terrace.

What’s your ideal Madison date? Share it with me.

What's CITY Talking About?

A map shows the eight sites in consideration: Monona Terrace, Blair St., Livingston St., Baldwin St., First St., Jonson St., Commercial Ave., Aberg Ave.
These eight rail sites are being considered for a future passenger rail station in Madison. (City of Madison)

🚃 Have Thoughts on the Train Station?

  • The city is hosting two public meetings in upcoming weeks to present information and get community input on where to potentially build a new Amtrak station.
  • The city has evaluated eight potential passenger rail station sites in three general corridors — downtown, First Street, and by the former Oscar Mayer plant. A recent study of the locations gave the downtown spots top marks.
  • The details: The first meeting is Jan. 30 at Madison Municipal Building from 5 to 7 p.m. The second meeting will be held virtually Feb. You can find all of the meeting information here. [City of Madison, Isthmus]

🎨 Calling All Artists

  • The Bubbler at the Madison Public Library is inviting local artists to apply for paid residencies and exhibitions available throughout 2024.
  • The Bubbler Room within Central Library is a public creative space focused on visual art and hands-on learning. This year’s residency is focused on creating installation within the space by fostering a sense of community through collaboration. Applications close March 4. [Madison Bubbler]

🍻 The Spirit of the Silver Dollar

  • In case you missed it, one of Madison’s oldest bars, the Silver Dollar will pour its last drink Feb. 3. But the spirit of the historic bar will live on in the soon-to-come $160.5 million Wisconsin History Center opening next door on the Capitol Square. The bar’s fourth-generation owners donated the tavern’s 1930s mahogany bar and other memorabilia to the historical society, which it will put to use in its fifth-floor gathering and event space. Friday Floof

If you feel like January is everlasting, you’re not alone. But thankfully, we’ve made it to the end of the week, which can only mean one thing: time for some floof.

Meet Marcel. This rescue pup has a gentle but mischievous soul, as perfectly illustrated in the pictures above. The orange paper is actually his “Good Dog Behavior” certificate. (Or rather, it was his certificate.) And despite his penchant for destruction, Marcel is full of love.

Voting Maps, Brain Maps, and Road Maps

The City Cast team is here to round up the news of the week. Bianca Martin, Hayley Sperling and Molly Stentz recap Wisconsin’s quest for new political voting maps and the huge new grant UW-Madison landed to study Alzheimer’s. Plus, we skid across town looking at Madison roads after the big storms and ask why the U.S. DOT is banning our sassy road signs.
