Goooooooooooooood morning, Madison!

Did you miss me? In case you missed it, City Cast editor Natalia Aldana rounded up some of Madison’s best vegan spots in yesterday’s Minutes.

Today’s email is full of news, PFAS (not literally), and Olympic dreams. Let’s get into it.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚫 Nazis go to Whitewater Campus

  • A group of neo-Nazis rallied on the UW-Whitewater campus this week chanting phrases like “we are everywhere” and “there will be blood.” The hate group also used a strobe light to project a swastika onto a dorm.
  • Members of the group hid their faces behind ski masks and left the area before police arrived. Students have expressed fear and anger following the event. ”It’s a lot of mixed emotions,” one student told WMTV15. “Fear, because I could be talking to somebody and not know if they were outside last night or not. Then frustration because these things keep happening.”
  • The bigger picture: The incident in Whitewater comes just two months after the neo-Nazi “Blood Tribe” marched through Madison carrying flags with swastikas and drawing condemnation from local and state officials. [Royal Purple, WMTV15, Wisconsin Examiner]

🖊️ What’s in a Street Name?

  • The city is looking to change the way it names its streets. City Council will introduce two resolutions this week aimed at creating more inclusivity in both the naming process and the street names themselves.
  • One of the resolutions would allow the creation of honorary street names, which wouldn’t have any influence on actual addresses, bus routes, or GPS systems, but rather would venerate individuals within the city.
  • The biggest proposed policy change would be allowing the use of first or last names (but not both!) for streets.
  • Dig deeper: Madison’s street-naming rules deter diversity, critics say [Cap Times]

✈️ Next to Board: MSN to LAX

  • For the first time since 2019, the Dane County Regional Airport will offer direct flights to Los Angeles. Starting in May, two flights will be available every week in the summer through Breeze Airways.
  • In addition to non-stop flights to Los Angeles, Breeze Airways has also announced it will offer direct flights to Tampa Bay and Orlando from Madison starting next month. [IB Madison]

Meet Estella, Madison’s Teen Olympian

Like many local teens, Estella Hasrick attends Middleton High School and likes to ski. But unlike just about anyone, Estella is currently in South Korea competing in the Winter Youth Olympics. She’s one of only four teens competing for Team USA in the ski jump competition. Bianca Martin caught up with Estella to learn what it takes to fly through the air.
