Happy February, Madison!
And happy 164th anniversary to Ma and Pa Ingalls. On this date in 1860, Charles Ingalls and Caroline Quiner were married in Concord, Wisconsin. The two are the parents of noted Wisconsinite Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the "Little House" series.

What's CITY Talking About?

✈️ Have Thoughts on F-35s?
- The Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs is hosting several community sessions this week to get feedback and answer questions about the 115th Fighter Wing at Madison’s Truax Field. Online registration is encouraged but not required. The first session is tonight at Madison College’s Health Education Building.
- Dig deeper: The jets have long been a source of contention in the community, raising fears over noise pollution and more. [WKOW, City Cast Madison 🎧]
🚌 Metro Prepares for More Change
- Madison’s Metro Transit announced its plan to drastically change how riders pay fares by moving to “Fast Fare Cards” this fall. The cards will eventually allow for riders to board from all doors which will allow for a speedier boarding process.
- The change doesn’t mean fares will increase. In fact, the system is designed to give riders the best deal and automatically caps fares. When riders tap the Fast Fare Card on a reader, it will automatically deduct $2 from the card’s balance. Fast Fare Cards will be available for free through 2024 but will cost $2 in 2025.
- The change is all part of the city’s preparation for Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT. [Wisconsin State Journal, City Cast Madison 🎧]
💟 Remembering a Madison Trailblazer
- Verline Gee was a pillar of the Madison community and helped lay the foundation for Black people to thrive in the city. Growing up in Jim Crow-era Missouri, Gee came to Wisconsin to study at UW-Madison and became one of the inaugural students in the school’s Black history program.
- As an adult, Gee helped found the Fountain of Life Covenant Church, where her son Alex is now a pastor. Gee’s daughter Lilada is an accomplished local artist and social worker. Gee died Jan. 1 after a years-long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. [Cap Times]
