📝 Madison’s most badass women

February 6, 2024

Good morning, Madison!

Sunday night marked the 66th annual Grammy Awards and while it was a big night for Swifties, it was also a major night for one local family-run business. Products from The Hair Forge were included in the award show’s gift bags. We love a local win!

😍 Meet the Zoo’s Newest Residents

  • Frenchie and Rizzo, two female rock hyraxes, recently made the move to Madison from the San Antonio Zoological Gardens and Aquarium. Hyraxes are native to Africa and parts of the Middle East. While the critters are about the size of a rabbit, their closest living relatives are elephants and manatees. You can meet the two ladies at the zoo’s primate building. [Channel 3000]

👋 Calling All North Siders

  • The city is hosting a community resource fair for North Side residents Feb. 8. From 6-8 p.m. at Warner Park, representatives from various city agencies will be around to answer questions and provide information on their services. Officials will provide updates on the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park, Metro Transit, the Northeast Area Plan, and more.
  • Flu and Covid-19 vaccines will also be available at the event for those without insurance or kids with BadgerCare. [City of Madison]

♻️ Can You Recycle That?

  • The city recently published a mini guide to help you become a better recycler. The four-page guide offers basic information on recycling and provides information on other waste collection resources the city offers.
  • Dig deeper: Learn more about Madison’s recycling systems and how you can help them work more efficiently. [City of Madison, City Cast Madison 🎧]

🍣 New East Side Sushi Spot

  • Niji Asian Cuisine has opened inside the former Doolittles Woodfire Grill near East Towne Mall serving sushi and hibachi. While Niji is new to Madison’s food scene, its owner Amanda Chen certainly isn’t. Chen also runs the 17-year-old sushi restaurant Takumi and the well-loved Gilman Street Sichuan spot Fugu. Take Me Home Tuesday

February is Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month, so for this Take Me Home Tuesday, the Dane County Humane Society would like you to meet a senior bun, Momma.

Momma is a sweet and calm rabbit who enjoys exploring her surroundings and stretching out. She also loves receiving pets on her beautiful coat and munching on her greens. Momma is looking for a new home to explore and a family who will spoil her with veggies to munch on and lots of love. In honor of February being Adopt a Shelter Rabbit Month, adoption fees for rabbits have been reduced to $30. Stop in to meet Momma!

Madison Roller Derby’s 20 Years of Bumps, Bruises, and Badassery

Twenty years ago, the Mad Rollin' Dolls, a campy women-only roller derby league was born in Madison. Now, the scrappy sports league has become Madison Roller Derby, an inclusive community non-profit organization with four home teams and two traveling teams. This season, they’re playing at the Alliant Energy Center and celebrating their 100th home game.
