📝 Looking for late night food?

February 23, 2024

Good morning, Madison!

Who is the most famous person from Wisconsin? To find out, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel gathered Wikipedia pageview data from the last five years to measure relative popularity.

Turns out, of the top five most-viewed Wikipedia pages for people from Wisconsin in the last five years, three of them are convicted murderers! Nice! Claiming the top spot was Jeffrey Dahmer. Ironically (or not), coming in at second place was Christopher Scarver, who murdered Dahmer in prison in 1994.

What's CITY Talking About?

a protester holds a sign that reads "I love someone who had an abortion"
“This petition is really asking whether the Constitution protects access to abortion,” Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin's chief strategy officer Michelle Velasquez said in a news conference. “We’re asking the court to basically say laws related to abortion would be subject to the highest level of scrutiny.” (Hayley Sperling / City Cast Madison)

⚖️ Planned Parenthood Petitions Wisconsin’s High Court

  • Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin has asked the state Supreme Court to weigh in on whether Wisconsin’s constitution protects abortion rights. This is the second legal challenge to the 174-year-old statute since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The court hasn’t said whether it will accept the case.
  • Dig deeper: The overturn of Roe v. Wade has had sweeping effects across the country and in Madison. We produced a multi-part (and now award-winning!) series on the issue in collaboration with Tone Madison. [Wisconsin Watch, Tone Madison]

🥡 Late Night Food Carts?

  • The city is considering a proposal that would allow food vendors to set up shop on the 700 and 800 blocks of State Street from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday nights. Under the current proposal, five vendors would be able to participate in the program.
  • The city has been working toward bringing late night vending to State Street for several years, but efforts were derailed by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. City Council is expected to take on the proposal in March. [The Badger Herald, City of Madison]

🥕 Meet Mad Rabbit Cafe

  • A new vegan restaurant has opened in the former home of La Kitchenette on Willy Street. Mad Rabbit Cafe is a fast-casual spot with a 100% vegan menu. The restaurant’s owner came to Madison from Sacramento, California, and many menu items have flavor profiles influenced by the region, like Southwest tofu wrap and the aptly named Californian flatbread. 💼 Join Our Team

  • Seriously, City Cast Madison is looking for a Senior Account Executive to join the new revenue team. Do you love supporting local businesses and local journalism? If that sounds like you, don’t hesitate to apply! [City Cast]

Friday Floof

It’s an extra happy Friday this week, folks, because I’ve got a double dose of floof for you this week.

Meet Taffy and Roux. Roux (big ears) is a local rescue who is the happiest go lucky girl in the world, according to her human Amber M. Taffy was rescued from southern Colorado and is too smart for her own good. She also hates motorcycles. Sometimes they begrudgingly cuddle.
