Happy Monday, Madison!

Two things: First, there’s still time to nominate us for Madison Magazine’s Best of Madison! Be sure to nominate City Cast Madison for best local podcast and Madison Minutes for best local news website.

Second, we’re hiring! If you (or someone you know) is a kickass salesperson, we’d love to hear from you.

What's CITY Talking About?

🛍️ Willy Street’s Newest Shop

  • La Moda Marie Youth Global Fashion has opened its doors in the former home of the Willy Street Treasure Shop. Located at 1012 Williamson St., the shop sells global fashion items that its owner sources largely from wholesalers in Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand.
  • Before opening the store, you could find the shop’s owners selling her goods at local events like the Willy Street Fair and La Fete de Marquette.
  • The shop is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. [Wisconsin State Journal]

☕ Students Want Starbucks Off Campus

  • A new student group is calling on UW-Madison to end its licensing agreement with Starbucks that lets the coffee giant operate a cafe inside Smith Residence Hall. The cafe opened in 2020 and has a 10-year contract.
  • Students in the group say their goal is to support the workers at Madison’s two unionized Starbucks locations and to oppose the company’s labor practices. Starbucks and its attorneys have been charged with more than 700 unfair labor practices.
  • The group’s rally was part of a larger movement taking place at universities across the country protesting the coffee chain. [Cap Times, The Guardian]

⛔ Stay Off the Ice!!

  • Three UW-Madison students had to be rescued after falling through thin ice on Lake Mendota early last Friday morning. One student had already made their way to shore when rescue crews arrived. The University of Wisconsin Police Department and Madison Fire Department worked together to locate and rescue the other two students. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the event.
  • Ironically, the Dane County Sheriff’s Department had issued a warning the day before about deteriorating ice conditions on area lakes, specifically calling out Lake Mendota. The sheriff urged people to use extreme caution on all Dane County lakes.
  • Try golf instead? The warm weather may have cut the season short for winter activities but it has also allowed the city to open three of its golf courses over the weekend. [The Badger Herald, DCSO, City of Madison]

How UW-Madison Plans to Combat Climate Change

UW-Madison announced some ambitious goals for the planet: power the entire campus with renewable energy by 2030, send no new waste to the landfill by 2040, and become carbon neutral by 2048. For an institution with 420 buildings and another 9,500 acres of off-campus property, that’s no small feat. So how will they get there?
