City Cast Madison
📝 UW’s March Madness mixed bag
March 27, 2024
Gooooooooood morning, Madison!
I’m back! Big thanks to City Cast Madison executive producer Molly Stentz for filling in for me while I was out sick.
Fun fact: this is the first real sick day I’ve taken in years. Back when it was just me and Sam running Madison Minutes, I never had the opportunity to take time off without also sacrificing the newsletter. There were many times I wrote this email while feeling less-than-stellar because we promised that you could count on us for daily information.
I’m not trying to glamorize “the grind” here — in fact it’s the opposite. I’m beyond thankful for my City Cast colleagues who have brought a (much-needed) layer of support to Madison Minutes. Thanks to them, I know I can take the time to just be a sick human when I need it.
When you support Madison Minutes with membership, you’re also supporting the kickass team of local journalists at City Cast Madison who make this work possible every day.
Become a member today and help our team do what we do best — bring you reliable local stories every day.

What's CITY Talking About?

💥 Pinball Drama
- A local business owner is under fire after getting caught defacing video game machines with tags at Aftershock Classic Arcade Bar. Kyle Metz, owner of Black Rose Blending Co., fessed up in a Facebook post and apologized for his actions.
- “My behavior was out of character on Saturday night, and totally unacceptable,” Metz wrote in the post. “I was in a bad headspace that night and had a few too many beers and made a huge mistake that I regret.”
- Aftershock filed a report with Madison Police. The arcade said restoration of the machines will be time-consuming and expensive. “This is more than Arcade; this is a museum and it’s hard to curate and repair these original cabinets. Something like this is really heartbreaking,” the arcade wrote in a social media post. [Facebook]
🏀 March Sadness and Comebacks
- The Wisconsin men’s basketball team broke brackets and hearts last week after losing to James Madison University in the first round of the NCAA championship tournament. Ultimately, JMU fell to Duke in the second round Sunday night.
- Meanwhile, the women’s team fought back from a 19-point deficit to defeat Southern Indiana Monday night and will go on to face Illinois State in the WNIT Super Sixteen. [Badger Herald, UW Athletics]
😋 A Few New Restaurant Openings
- West side: Amar Peru is set to open in the former home of Mr. Brews Taphouse at 610 Junction Road. The owners, who used to run Inka Heritage on Park Street and Estacion Inka downtown, hope to open the spot this summer.
- East side: Madison-based grain bowl and salad shop Forage Kitchen is opening a Sun Prairie location this spring.
- Beyond: Mishqui Peruvian Cuisine has opened a new location in Middleton. The new spot is about half as big as the Monona Drive location and opened earlier this month. St. Charles Station in Fitchburg recently re-launched with a new focus, featuring Cajun cuisine with a Wisconsin supper club twist. [Wisconsin State Journal, IB Madison, Cap Times]
