Good morning, Madison!
I hope the snow didn’t stop you from getting to the polls yesterday. And be sure to watch out for slippery roads today. Now let’s dive into the news.

What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ Election Roundup
- Presidential primary: President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump handedly won their primaries. Notably, more than 12% of Republican voters opted for Nikki Haley, who ended her campaign in March. Trump made his first visit to the state in nearly two years on Election Day, stopping in Green Bay for a rally. On the Democratic side, more than 40,000 voters opted for the Uninstructed Delegation. Though it may not seem like a lot, Biden won Wisconsin by about 21,000 votes in 2020.
- Constitutional amendments: Voters approved a pair of constitutional amendments that will ban the use of private funds and restrict who can participate in election administration. Conservatives have hailed the vote as a victory but election officials fear the change will leave them understaffed and underfunded.
- Mixups at Memorial Union: Voters in student-dense Wards 60 and 134 had their poll hours extended after they were turned away and mistakenly told that voting wasn’t taking place at Memorial Union. Yikes!
- You can check out a full breakdown of the Dane County Board races here. Lastly, shoutout to all of the poll workers who helped the day run smoothly, but especially to these folks who did it all outside in the snow. [NBC, Cap Times, Dane County, Wisconsin State Journal]
🍼 UW Announces Parental Leave Plan
- A new policy will give employees of the Universities of Wisconsin and UW-Madison six weeks paid time off following the birth or adoption of a child.
- The move comes after years of pressure from faculty and staff. Current policies say employees must use their sick or vacation days for paid time off, or take an unpaid leave of absence. [Cap Times]
🇺🇸 The President Is Coming (Again)
- President Job Biden will be back in Wisconsin next week, this time making a stop in Madison. The April 8 event marks the president’s third trip to the Dairy State this year and his 10th trip to the state as president. [WPR]
🥡 News From Ha Long Bay
- The bad news: Local favorite Ha Long Bay announced it will close the doors to its Willy Street restaurant April 8 for renovations.
- The good news: While construction is happening, the restaurant will operate out of Little Palace on King Street with a blended menu that includes favorites from Ha Long Bay and Little Palace.
- Stay tuned: City Cast Madison got the scoop on what the future holds for Ha Long Bay. Stay tuned for Thursday’s podcast to get in the know! [Instagram, City Cast Madison]
🏳️⚧️ Evers Vetos Anti-LGBTQ Bill
- Gov. Tony Evers vetoed legislation this week that would have banned high school transgender athletes from competing on teams that align with their gender identity. Republicans in the legislature don’t have enough votes needed to override the veto.
- “This type of legislation, and the harmful rhetoric beget by pursuing it, harms LGBTQ Wisconsinites’ and kids’ mental health, emboldens anti-LGBTQ harassment, bullying, and violence, and threatens the safety and dignity of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, especially our LGBTQ kids,” Evers said in a statement. Where Is It?

⬆️ Last Week’s Answer
It’s a pretty mural, isn’t it? Last week I asked where you can find this piece of art and nearly two dozen of you chimed in with the correct answer! This painting can be found downtown at Lisa Link Peace Park, otherwise known simply as Peace Park.
The park is named for Elizabeth “Lisa” Link, an activist who was instrumental in reviving the Madison chapter of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, according to the city. Link passed away in 1982 but her legacy lives on in the park, which underwent a $1.1 million renovation in 2010, creating a performance space, Peace Pole, and more.
🎉 Shoutout to this week’s winners Mike W. and Erin J., who both answered correctly in less than 10 minutes!

⬇️ This Week’s Clues
Where is this rabbit?
- Formally, this rabbit goes by the name L'amante (AKA “the lover” in Italian).
- This location is home to over 24,000 works of art.
- While it originally opened in the 1970s, this spot underwent major renovations in the 2010s, doubling its size.
But wait, there’s more!
We’re opening up submissions so YOU can ask the question — where is it?
Share your landmarks, secret spots, favorite signs, or whatever comes to mind to challenge your fellow Madison Minutes readers.
