📝 Madison teachers won’t settle
April 17, 2024
Happy Wednesday, Madison!
Did someone say free wine? Starting this week and running on Thursdays through May, the downtown restaurant Merchant will offer guests a free glass of wine with dinner. The idea is to highlight smaller, American producers and give people a chance to taste something new.
Cheers!

What's CITY Talking About?

🎬 Farley Biopic Gets Family’s Blessing
- A feature film on the life of Madison-born comedian Chris Farley is in the works starring Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser. Actor and filmmaker Josh Gad is set to direct.
- A beloved comedian and actor, Farley was a cast member of “Saturday Night Live” and grew up in Maple Bluff. He died at 33 of a drug overdose and is buried in Madison’s Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. [Hollywood Reporter, Madison Minutes]
💸 MMSD Staff Calls For Raises
- Hundreds of Madison teachers and staff rallied for higher wages and smaller class sizes in a protest Monday night. The group of around 200 delivered a petition with roughly 2,000 signatures to the school board that calls for more staff and smaller classes.
- The bigger picture: The Madison School Board has been contemplating freezing wages as it faces a nearly $12.5 million deficit next year. Madison Teachers Inc. (the union that represents MMSD teachers and staff) is arguing for a 4.12% wage increase, which is the maximum allowed by state law.
- Some context: Last year, the school board approved a historic 8% cost of living wage increase after initially offering a 3.5% increase. MTI has argued that anything less than a 4.12% increase for next year is effectively a pay cut for teachers. [Wisconsin State Journal, WORT, Cap Times]
📦 Exact Sciences Doesn’t Have Your Mail
- Good news: Your package was delivered! Bad news: It’s at Exact Sciences. This is more or less the message that dozens of Madisonians recently received while awaiting their mail.
- A scanning mixup at UPS incorrectly told some Madison-area residents that the local biotech company had their goods. Packages weren’t actually sent to Exact Sciences and all should end up at their intended destination (some already have).
- UPS hasn’t said exactly what happened but they are aware of the issue. As one Reddit user noted, be thankful no one accidentally received any of Exact Science’s packages 💩 [Wisconsin State Journal, Reddit]

Where Is It?

⬆️ Last Week’s Answer
Ok technically, I asked where you can find this elegant rabbit two weeks ago but time isn’t real and we carry on!
🥳 Big shoutout to everyone who sent in a guess, more than 120 (!!!) people chimed in and most of you got it right. Of course, the correct answer is the Chazen Museum of Art. Congrats to this week’s winner, Bee G!
✨ Fun fact about me: My former college roommate and I have matching Chazen tattoos.

⬇️ This Week’s Clues
Where can you find this cheeky sign?
