Good morning, Madison!

State Street is looking a little more colorful these days after hundreds of volunteers came out over the weekend to help paint murals on the 400-600 blocks of the street.

If you’ll recall, the murals are just the start of a pilot program to turn that stretch of State Street into a pedestrian mall this summer. Starting this May, be on the lookout for more benches, plants, and art — including six-foot-tall plastic pink flamingos 🦩

🥎 Meet the Night Mares

  • Madison’s softball team officially has a name — welcome to the Night Mares. The name and the team’s new coach was announced during an event Saturday at the Orpheum Theater. The Night Mares will pitch their first game this summer at Warner Park.
  • Dig deeper: Madison truly loves women’s sports. [Cap Times, Madison Minutes]

🍸 The End of An Era on State Street

  • Nick's Restaurant on State Street announced it will close May 11 after 65 years in business. The restaurant is one of Madison’s oldests and has been family-run since the 1960s. The new tenant is set to be a Mexican restaurant opening this summer.
  • “It’s been an amazing run and we will miss it tremendously. However, we’ve [known] in our hearts for sometime now, that it’s time to call it a day,” the restaurant posted online. [Facebook]

🚫 Why the Terrace Pier Collapsed

  • UW-Madison has released the findings of its investigation into a swimming pier collapse at Memorial Union last Labor Day. If you’ll recall, on Sept. 4, 2023, a number of students and members of the public plunged into the waters of Lake Mendota when the pier they were on collapsed. No lifeguards were on duty at the time.
  • The university now says that a number of factors contributed to the incident, including unruly behavior, a lack of inspections, and a breakdown of communications between staff and lifeguards.
  • A new pier is set to be installed in June. [UW-Madison, Wisconsin State Journal]

Take Me Home Tuesday

June Bug is an adorable pit bull mix carrying a stuffed toy
June Bug would like to offer you this toy, do you accept? (DCHS)

This week, Dane County Humane Society would like you to meet June Bug. This two-year-old pup was stressed when she first arrived at DCHS earlier in the month but has since settled a bit, showing that she’s a wiggly, happy, social dog. June Bug leans in for pets and will roll for belly rubs. She’s so sweet and gently takes treats when offered. She also enjoys running around the yards, going for walks, and playing with toys. June Bug is looking for a patient family who will work with her on establishing a routine while also spoiling her with lots of love and snuggles.

Why These Madisonians Want More Development

You may have heard the phrase, “Not In My Backyard,” or NIMBY. It’s often used – negatively – to describe neighbors who don’t want development in their neighborhood, whether it’s a new apartment building or affordable housing. Meaning that many of us support changes in principle, until it potentially affects our own neighborhood.

But Will Ochowicz says that more Madisonians should say YIMBY, or “Yes In My Backyard” in order to help ease the city’s housing crisis.
