What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ More Local Leaders Call For Alder Resignation

  • Content warning: This story makes mention of domestic and physical violence.
  • More than two dozen city, county, and state officials signed off on a statement calling for embattled Madison City Council member Charles Myadze to resign amid allegations of domestic abuse.
  • Three women have come forward alleging the alder physically and emotionally abused or harassed them. Myadze has denied the claims. Nevertheless, the calls for his resignation have continued to grow.
  • “It is our duty as elected officials and community leaders to stand with victims and survivors of abuse, to hold the standard of integrity and excellence from our fellow elected officials, to call out problematic behavior and demand accountability when an elected official has caused harm. Alder Myadze's victims deserve our trust and support. Their voices in this will not be silenced. We as leaders in our community stand with them,” the group of 25 elected officials and community leaders wrote in a statement. [Madison365]

🏗️ New Home For Porchlight

  • A local developer is working to acquire the four-story campus-area building that’s currently home to nonprofit Porchlight Inc.’s operations. LZ Ventures of Madison plans to build Porchlight a new eight-story building with office space and 70 studio apartments for people experiencing homelessness at 521 E. Washington Ave. The new location is within close distance to multiple other local resource centers like The Beacon and the Salvation Army of Dane County.
  • Once that move is complete, the developers plan to tear down Porchlight’s current building at 306 N. Brooks St. in order to build a 15-story student housing project.
  • Both groups are excited about the project, Porchlight’s current building has been in desperate need of repair and increased enrollment at UW-Madison has put a strain on student housing availability. [Wisconsin State Journal]

⛔ No NIL Deals For High Schoolers

  • The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) rejected a proposal to allow high school student athletes to benefit from usage of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The change would have allowed student athletes to monetize their success outside of school scholarships and benefits.
  • Dig deeper: What happened when college athletes started scoring NIL deals worth millions. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, City Cast Madison 🎧]
