📝 Encampments come to Madison
April 30, 2024 · ✏️ Thanks to City Cast Madison editor Molly Stentz!
Good morning, Madison!
City Cast Madison producer Phil Surkis moved to Madison this year. Originally an east coaster by way of Oakland, CA, he’s never lived in the midwest. (!!!) Since we’re all about Madison, we want to get Phil up to speed and need your help doing it.
What should he do/eat/attend to experience the real Madison? Let us know, because we’re gonna make him do it.

What's CITY Talking About?
⛺ UW Students Set Up Camp
- Hundreds of UW-Madison students gathered on library mall Monday in protest of the war in Gaza. Students set up a “liberated zone” on the mall, pitching roughly a dozen tents in an encampment, despite a warning last week from Dean of Students Christina Olstad noting camping is not allowed on campus.
- The protesters demand the university divest from companies alleged to be engaged in human rights violations. The students also called on the university to cut ties with Israeli institutions, including study abroad programs. UW Muslim faculty and staff have expressed support for the movement and called on the university to comply with the protesters’ demands.
- Students at UW-Milwaukee also set up an encampment Monday with similar demands. [Badger Herald, Daily Cardinal, Cap Times, WisPolitics]
😷 Measles Confirmed in Dane County
- Public Health Madison & Dane County is investigating a confirmed case of measles in an individual living in Dane County. The investigation identified two local spots where people may have been exposed to the illness on April 22. They are uBreakiFix at 2810 E. Washington Ave. and Noodles & Company at 110 Limestone Pass Cottage Grove.
- Measles symptoms appear 7 to 14 days after contact with the virus and typically include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. Measles can be prevented by the MMR vaccine and PHMDC offers free vaccines to uninsured adults and children. [PHMDC, CDC]
🚗 Mifflin Aftermath
- Thousands of people, mostly UW-Madison students, attended the annual Mifflin Street Block Party on Saturday and caused an array of destruction. Commanders for the Madison Police Department said this was the largest year for the annual block party since the pandemic.
- The damage? One car was flipped over and another was severely damaged; More than 80 people were arrested, mostly for alcohol related charges; And one front porch caved in (no injuries were reported). [Madison Minutes, City of Madison, GoFundMe]

Take Me Home Tuesday

For this week’s Take Me Home Tuesday, the Dane County Humane Society would like to introduce you to Sky. He’s a smart 10-month-old pup who already knows a variety of requests, including sit, stay, paw, and come. Sky is energetic and enjoys going for walks and hikes, and fetching sticks. He can be nervous sometimes, especially around men and when meeting new people, but he warms up quickly. When comfortable, Sky shows his goofy, playful, and snuggly side.
Sky’s ideal home should not have small children. He’s looking for a patient family who will continue to work with him on his courage and training, while spoiling him with playtime, exercise, and snuggles. Sky has been at DCHS for a bit, so he’s a member of their Lonely Hearts Club and his adoption fee has been reduced.
