Good morning, Madison. The news is pretty heavy today so if you need a moment of lightness, enjoy this video of a baby crane spotted in Middleton.
Now let’s get into it.

What's CITY Talking About?

📣 Police Raid UW-Madison Encampment
- Please note this is a developing story.
- More than two dozen people were arrested Wednesday morning after police descended upon the pro-Palestine student encampment on UW-Madison’s Library Mall. Police arrived shortly before 7 a.m. telling students to remove their tents (camping is not allowed on any university property under UW rules). When protesters refused, police began breaking down the encampment, causing injuries to both officers and protesters.
- UW Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin issued a statement saying she authorized the clearing of the encampment, citing the difference between “free expression” and “lawlessness”. Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman commended Mnookin for her actions.
- Multiple UW professors and staff were arrested and suffered injuries as a result of Wednesday’s police action. Despite police tearing down many of the tents, students have put them back up and have continued their programming.
- Meanwhile, the encampment at UW-Milwaukee is still fully intact and has seen a limited police presence. [Cap Times, UW-Madison, Daily Cardinal, Badger Herald, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
🚨 Mt. Horeb Middle School Goes Into Lockdown
- The whole Mount Horeb Area School District went into lockdown Wednesday morning after reports of an active shooter were made at Mount Horeb Middle School. The suspect didn’t make it into the school and the threat had been “neutralized” by 11:50 a.m. No staff or student injuries were reported. [Cap Times]
🏆 Madison Teacher Wins Top Honors
- Shabazz high school teacher Brian Counselman was named the 2025 Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Counselman has taught at Shabazz for seven years but has been teaching in the Madison Metropolitan School District for two decades. He was previously named MMSD's Teacher of the Year in 2017.
