📝 Should this Madison alder resign?

May 6, 2024 · ✏️ Thanks to City Cast editor Wil Fulton!

Goooooood morning, Madison!

And happy Monday. In case you missed it, City Cast Madison’s newest producer Phil Surkis needs your help.

Phil just moved to town from California and is looking to take a crash course on how to become a true Madisonian — that’s where you come in.

What should he do/see/experience/taste/etc. to feel like a local?

👮 Investigation Outlines Misconduct by Former UWPD Chief

  • A recent investigation from UW-Madison found the former UWPD Chief Kristen Roman violated multiple university policies before her resignation in February. Among the violations were her failure to report a romantic relationship with a subordinate and later giving them special treatment, and misuse of a department vehicle.
  • Roman served as UWPD chief since 2017 and before that served with the Madison Police Department for more than two decades.
  • “I accept responsibility for these policy infractions, and I hope that my legacy is not defined by them. It has truly been an honor to have served my community and my alma mater for the past 34 years, and I’m humbled to have done so alongside so many dedicated men and women,” Roman said in a statement. 📍 Changes To the West Area Plan

  • After receiving a barrage of backlash from area residents, the city has made some adjustments to its West Area Plan. The new draft plan removed contentious rezoning proposals for the Highlands and Regent Street/Whitney Way areas. It also nixed a proposed north-south shared-use path from the Sauk Creek Greenway in favor of increased improvements to existing bike paths.
  • Why the backlash? One of the most hotly debated pieces of the plan was the implementation of proactive rezoning in five locations. The new draft cut the proposal down to three areas.
  • What’s next? The city is hosting public meetings this month and next to gather more feedback. A final plan will then be drafted and then work its way through the city’s approval process.

🥕 Cap Centre Gets New Ownership

  • The downtown grocery store, Capitol Centre Market, has a new owner. What will change? Not much. The new owner is a Madison resident who owns several small grocery stores across Wisconsin. He’s also a regular shopper at Cap Centre and plans to keep the store’s name and staff of 50 employees. [Wisconsin State Journal]

🛍️ Night Market This Week!

  • The first installment of the Madison Night Market is this Thursday. From 5-9 p.m. on State Street and the Capitol Square you’ll find vendors, artists, food trucks, music, and more. You can check out a full list of the vendors and shops participating here.
  • Can’t make it this week? No worries. Markets will also be held June 13, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, and Oct. 17.
