📝 The city will collect your brush
May 24, 2024 · ✏️ Thanks to City Cast editor Bryan M. Vance!
Goooooooooood morning, Madison! A couple of quick notes before getting into today’s news.
First, there won’t be a newsletter on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Enjoy the long weekend if you have one!
Second, the City Cast annual audience survey is live! I know there were some technical issues when it first came out (and thanks to the folks who let me know about that!) but that’s all been fixed. If you’ve got time to spare, you can take the survey here.
Finally, I have some personal news to share with you. But you’ll have to listen to today’s City Cast Madison podcast to find out what it is 😄

What's CITY Talking About?
🍃 Got Brush?
- The city has announced special set out dates for brush collection following the widespread destruction caused by Tuesday’s storm, which managed to bring down one of Madison's oldest trees.
- Set out dates vary by neighborhood, and you can check yours here. The Streets Division drop-off sites will also accept brush.
- Lost power during the storm? MGE says it has restored power to nearly 90% of customers impacted by the outages, but full restoration is expected to take multiple days. In the meantime, the Madison Fire Department has tips for anyone still affected. [Wisconsin State Journal, City of Madison, WKOW]
🏖️ The Country’s Tallest Waterslide is Opening in the Dells
- The 145-foot Rise of the Icarus slide at Mount Olympus in Wisconsin Dells opens this weekend. Park employees said they did their research to ensure that the new slide is in fact the tallest in the U.S. The Dells is home to more than 20 waterparks, and over 200 waterslides. [Channel 3000, WPR]
🎤 Your Lunchtime read: The Gamma Ray Bar Is a Labor of Love
- “What do singer-songwriter Beck, ‘Soul Train’ creator Don Cornelius and electromagnetic radiation have in common? They all inspired Kevin Willmott II, the longtime Madison musician and venue manager, when he set out to create The Gamma Ray Bar. The independent venue will open with a stacked local lineup on June 1 at 121 W. Main St.”
- Dig deeper: City Cast Madison recently sat down with Willmott to talk about his hopes for this new endeavor. [Madison Magazine, City Cast Madison 🎧]

Friday Floof

Happy Friday!! It’s time for some well-deserved floof. And this week’s cutie is a verified sweetheart.
Mochi is a baby pomeranian pupperoni who loves life and cat trees. She hops around like a bunny rabbit and loves to follow you around. Though she may be small, her personality is massive. She’s currently working on learning tricks with her human Emily S. and enjoying being the life of the party wherever she goes.
Do you have a floof to share with the Madison Minutes community?

Storm Aftermath, the Future of State Street, & a New Train
The City Cast Madison podcast team is here to round up the news of the week. Podcast host Bianca Martin and I recap the impacts of Tuesday’s intense storm and the city’s cleanup efforts. The Madison Common Council moved to save three buildings on the 400 block of State Street from demolition, and a St. Paul to Chicago passenger rail, Wisconsin’s second, is in service. Plus, I share some exciting news!
