City Cast Madison

📝 Aren’t we the best?

June 4, 2024 · ✏️ Thanks to City Cast editor Bryan M. Vance!

Happy Tuesday, Madison! Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes yesterday, y’all really know how to make a girl feel special 💕

The best gift I could ask for is a moment of your time — we’re in the running for Madison Magazine’s annual Best of Madison contest! City Cast Madison is up for Best Local Podcast and Madison Minutes is in the running for Best Local News Website, both of which are in the Arts & Entertainment category.

Voting is open through the end of the month. Last year, the podcast won the gold and our humble newsletter snagged bronze. Can you help us both take home the gold this year?

What's CITY Talking About?

💸 Prepare To Pay More For Event Parking

  • The city’s Transportation Commission recently voted to raise special event parking from $8 to $15 in several downtown garages. The change will go into effect July 1.
  • Why the increase? As with most things these days, the cost of staffing and maintaining the garages has increased. The last time the city raised the rates was in 2016.
  • Some residents and local organizations have raised accessibility and equity concerns over the change, saying low-income and disabled residents will take the brunt of the burden with the change. [Cap Times]

💪 Madison’s Iron Woman

  • Madisonian Jackie Hering took first place in the IRONMAN European Championship in Hamburg, Germany over the weekend.
  • The triathlon is a true display of human ability. The race kicks off with a 2.4-mile swim, then moves on to a 112-mile bike ride, and ends with a full marathon. Sounds easy enough, right? [WMTV15]

🥕 Your Lunchtime Read: A Hater’s Guide to the Dane County Farmers’ Market.

  • “Look, I get it: here in Madison, we love to be outdoors and celebrate local excellence; and, more than anything, we love social ritual. The Farmers’ Market satisfies all three of those criteria extremely efficiently. But sometimes I just want a lovely bundle of fresh radishes. Maybe some ramps. I don’t besmirch anyone for planning a Saturday morning outing for their friend group to walk the Square. [...] It’s just also an impediment for the savvy shoppers out there who are on the lookout for green garlic to round out their stir-fry dinner plans.”

Happy Take Me Home Tuesday, this week is a twofer!

The Dane County Humane Society would like you to meet a senior bonded pair, Titan and Toby. These pups are a little nervous, but once comfortable, love to cuddle. Even though Titan is a Miniature Pinscher mix and Toby is a Chihuahua mix, the two act just like brothers. According to their previous family, the dogs know a few requests, including sit, down, and spin. Titan, who has a form of alopecia, is more nervous than his best buddy Toby. Their ideal home would have humans who are teenaged and older, and no other dogs. They’re looking for a patient family who will spoil them with snuggles and love. Is that you?
