What's CITY Talking About?

🚌 What’s With the Red Paint?

  • We’re inching closer to the official launch of Bus Rapid Transit in Madison. The transportation endeavor has been years in the making and has become more visible these days with the introduction of new buses, stations, and lane markings on roads around town.
  • This has had people wondering — what’s up with the red paint on the streets? Can I drive there? The short answer is that the red blocks on the street denote where future “bus only” lanes will be. Right now, no one will stop you from driving in them. But soon, the lanes will be clearly marked “BUS ONLY” with signage for more clarity. Once that’s in place, motorists will not be allowed in the lanes.

🚨 MPD Investigating Murder on Willy St.

  • A 27-year-old man is dead following a shooting on Willy Street in the early morning hours of last Friday. Madison Police officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Willy Street around 1:30 a.m. after multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. Police recovered more than 40 shell casings from the scene, and multiple local businesses were damaged.
  • No arrests have been made as of Friday afternoon. Police believe the incident was targeted, stemming from an argument at the Crystal Corner bar. [MPD, Wisconsin State Journal]

🏐 From UW to the Olympics

  • Two former Badgers have been named to the 2024 Women's National Indoor Volleyball Team. Lauren Carlini and Dana Rettke are two of the most decorated Badgers of the Wisconsin volleyball program, and are no strangers to the Olympic courts. Of the 12 athletes on the 2024 USA Volleyball Olympic roster, eight are from the Big Ten. Go team!

🌮 Coming Soon: Atico

  • The owner of Pasqual's Cantina is opening a new restaurant at the top of the Moxy hotel on East Washington Avenue. The new spot is called Atico and is expected to open this fall. Atico means "penthouse" in Spanish, which is fitting given its location.
  • Also coming soon is Lacy’s Cafe. I told you about this spot in a previous newsletter but now there’s more information. The spot, located inside the Bur Oak, will open June 20 serving pastries, snack plates, chips, vegan hot dogs, coffee, kombucha and more.
  • Related: Tons of new restaurants have opened in Madison recently, and City Cast Madison rounded them all up in one podcast episode just for you. How nice! [Wisconsin State Journal, Cap Times, City Cast Madison 🎧]
