💊 Overdose Prevention in Dane County

  • Dane County is working to create drop-in clinics that would help reduce drug overdoses. The sites are described as a one-stop-shop for anyone dealing with addiction, offering peer support and supplies like sterile syringes, drug testing strips, and naloxone. Proponents say not only would these sites help reduce overdoses, but they would also reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis C.
  • The funding for the clinic would come from lawsuit settlements against opioid companies.

🏢 More Money for Men’s Shelter

  • Construction for a permanent shelter for men experiencing homelessness is on track to begin this month. It will be located on the east side on Bartillon Drive, near Reindahl Park.
  • Last week, City Council granted the project an extra $2 million on top of its original $25 million budget after construction bids came in higher than expected.
  • This shelter was originally announced in 2022 and is said to be the first of its kind in Wisconsin, offering space for 250 people. [Cap Times]

⚾ Madison Mallards Remember Chris Farley

  • At the Madison Mallards game Saturday, the team wore custom jerseys to honor the late Chris Farley. A custom Farley jersey was put up for auction and some of the proceeds will benefit the Recovery Foundation, a local nonprofit that helps people dealing with addiction access mental health treatment.
  • Chris Farley’s older brother, Tom Farley, attended the game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game.
  • Related: Chris Farley grew up in Maple Bluff and is now buried in Madison. But he’s not the only celebrity buried here. [🔒WSJ, Madison Minutes]
It’s always fun at a Mallards game, but the Chris Farley nights are the best. It used to be the bobble-heads, now they’re all dressed like Chris. It may give me nightmares, but it’s also a lot of fun.

On this installment of Take Me Home Tuesday, the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) would like you to meet Roti and his best feline friend, Kuttu.

When these adult male cats arrived at DCHS at the end of May, they were very shy. But through the help of the Jackson Galaxy Project’s #CatPawsitive initiative, where the DCHS volunteers and staff use clicker training and positive reinforcement, the cats grew more comfy.

After one session, Roti really opened up to show his sweet and cuddly side. This dynamic duo is looking for a quiet home where they can relax while enjoying lots of sunny spots to nap in, and a patient family who will give them the time they need to come out of their shells.

The duo have been at DCHS for a bit, so they’re members of the Lonely Hearts Club and their adoption fee has been reduced to $60 for the pair.
