July 15, 2024
Good morning, Madison! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and took advantage of all of the different activities Madison offered. Did you check anything off your bucket list?

What's CITY Talking About?

Madison 🛣️ Upcoming Road Closures
- Starting at 7 a.m. today, construction will be taking place on East Wilson Street between South Pinckney Street and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. One traffic lane will remain open at all times, but it may shift throughout the day.
- Then, starting July 24, the construction company will move east along Wilson Street and begin work on the intersection of Butler, Wilson, and King Streets. [City of Madison]
🦟 An Itchy Summer
- If you’ve noticed more mosquitoes around town, you’re not crazy. Due to the immense amount of rain at the beginning of the summer, there’s been a lot of standing water in Madison, creating the perfect environment for female mosquitoes to lay their eggs.
- May and June were cooler, which staved off the bloodsuckers for a while. But now that it’s warm again, the mosquitoes are much more prominent. [Cap Times]
📚 Could Madison Libraries Have New Hours?
- Due to cuts in the budget of Madison’s Public Libraries, city leaders are considering cutting down on hours of service, eliminating Sunday and evening hours, along with 18% of programs the libraries offer.
- The change would result in more than a dozen layoffs and would save more than $1 million annually. [Cap Times]

- Although cases are low compared to last winter’s peak, COVID-19 infection rates are on the rise, following a national trend.

Executive producer Hayley Sperling sat down with Tone Madison publisher Scott Gordon to get the details of a new state law that allows law enforcement agencies to charge public records requesters for the cost of redacting video or audio material, like body camera footage. The legislation has rattled local reporters, public officials, and police transparency advocates for its retaliatory nature and overall vague language.
