👀 Last night’s vote on the property tax referendum
August 21, 2024 · — Natalia Aldana
Good morning, Madison! Last night City Council voted overwhelmingly in support of adding a $22 million property tax referendum to the Nov. 5 ballot. This leaves the question of how to fix Madison’s operating budget woes up to voters (like you!) 🫡

What's CITY Talking About?
🏫 Southside Principal Hired Without Community Input
- The Madison School District hired Candace Terrell in 2020 as the Southside Elementary School principal without following two key steps meant to screen potential hires. Neither a feedback survey nor a community input meeting was held, despite a 2018 district policy stating a community panel “must be used.”
- This revelation comes after 24 Southside staff and families filed a complaint on April 4 accusing Terrell of creating a culture of bullying and retaliation.
- The district confirmed to the Wisconsin State Journal that the screening steps didn’t take place because of the pandemic. [Wisconsin State Journal]
💸 UW President to Request $855M Funding
- Universities of Wisconsin president Jay Rothman and officials announced they plan to ask their regents on Thursday to approve the million-dollar funding as part of the 2025-27 state budget.
- The $855 million is intended to stave off tuition increases, cover staff raises, keep up with inflation, and create a new AI hub, among other initiatives.
- If the regents sign off, it would go to Gov. Tony Evers for consideration. [Channel 3000]
