What's CITY Talking About?

☑️ Harris in Milwaukee, and Wisconsin (Kinda) Represents at DNC
- Vice President Kamala Harris spoke in Milwaukee Tuesday night vowing to “proudly” legalize and restore Roe v. Wade protections if elected president.
- During the ceremonial roll call at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Gov. Tony Evers notably struggled on stage while announcing 94 of the state’s 95 delegates were backing Harris.
- Evers has since posted on X that “sometimes the jazz gets the best of ya,” a nod to his 2022 “jazzed as hell” speech. [Wis Politics, Wisconsin State Journal, X]

🛒 Park Street Grocery Store Lease Almost Finalized
- Maurer’s Urban Market grocery store’s owner announced Aug. 19 they’re “probably within a week or so” of signing a lease.
- Plans for a new grocery on South Park Street began eight years ago in anticipation of Pick ‘n Save’s potential closure. Many were concerned the area could become a food desert.
- Over the last four years, the city has pledged $9.1 million for the grocery project. [Isthmus]
🏗️ Is the End Near For UW-Madison’s Humanities Building?
- Tearing down the Mosse Humanities Building at UW-Madison is among the Universities of Wisconsin’s top priorities for its next capital budget. If approved, the university hopes to demolish the building by 2030.
- The replacement of the Humanities building will cost $292.5 million, with taxpayers footing $245 million. [Wisconsin State Journal]
🌱 Madisonians Say They’re Weeded with Overgrown Weeds
- The city has logged more than 400 complaints since the beginning of August. Complaints include wanting neighbors to mow their lawns and concerns that overgrown vegetation makes it harder to drive.
- There have been 47% more complaints this year than in 2023. This could be a result of a wetter than usual summer, as lake levels are higher than year’s past due to repeated rainfall. [Cap Times]
