Good tidings to you! Wherever you are (around Madison, obvs). Good tidings for Friday, and a happy new newsletter 🤗

What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️ Madison Mayor Reps WI at DNC
- Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is among the thousands of delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this week.
- Rhodes-Conway said she has served in the mayoral office under both the Trump and Biden administrations, and only the latter understood the importance of cities.
- “I have every expectation a Harris-Walz administration will keep that focus,” Rhodes-Conway said.
- The mayor said she is focusing on connecting with future policymakers this week so they can understand the issues important to Madisonians. [WMTV]
💰 Madison Moves Forward with (Another) Referendum
- After the City Council on Tuesday overwhelmingly voted in support of adding a $22 million property tax referendum to the November ballot, the issue of fixing Madison’s operating budget now lies with voters.
- If approved, property taxes would increase by around $230 annually for the average Madison homeowner. But if voters don’t approve the referendum, the city would need to cut about $6 million in services in 2025.
- The Goodman Pool is among the more than 70 services the city might cut to fill the budget gap. [Cap Times]

🛍️ New Goodwill Outlet Coming to Madison
- The Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin will open a new outlet store on the west side Aug. 28. It will include a retail outlet store, a warehouse, and e-commerce operations. At this store, shoppers will purchase items by the pound, similar to the St. Vincent de Paul Dig & Save Outlet.
- This will be the first site where Goodwill will offer job training for people with disabilities or who have been imprisoned.
- The first 200 customers will receive free reusable bags, and there will also be prizes at the door. [Wisconsin State Journal]
