🦟 Don’t put your bug spray away… yet
August 28, 2024
Howdy, Madison! Is anyone still fending off the pesky mosquitoes? I have a ton of bites to prove that they are still out for blood. Several early deluges of rainfall have created the perfect environment for mosquitoes to multiply and wreak havoc on ankles everywhere. And as the seasons change, so do the bloodsuckers in our environment.
City Cast Madison host Bianca Martin spoke with Lyric Bartholomay, director of the Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease, to get the details on how to protect yourself (and your pets) from ticks and mosquitoes.

What's CITY Talking About?

⛺ Encampment Deal at UW-Madison
- As UW-Madison students return to campus, pro-Palestinian protestors are looking at deadlines set between them and the university. Most recently, the university had an Aug. 1 deadline to start looking for a staff member in the Division of Student Affairs whose work will focus on supporting students impacted by war, violence, and displacement. UW fulfilled this deadline and posted the job listing on July 22.
- There are more deadlines laid out for the rest of the year, including UW-Madison inviting at least one Palestinian university student to campus for the next three academic years.
- Student protesters still have concerns over the university’s handling of the encampment, which has led to investigations and sanctions of some students and groups. [Cap Times]
🌲 2024 Brush Collection Ending Soon
- The last day to set out brush this year will be Sept. 8. To get the final date for your specific house, check out this link.
- Brush should be between 18 inches and 8 feet in length, and no thicker than 8 inches in diameter. Make sure the cut ends are all facing the same direction and they should be placed four feet away from any obstructions. [City of Madison]
🏢 Development Project Comes to a Halt
- Plans to redevelop the former Madison College site at 33 W. Johnson St. have come to a stop. The historic structure was set to be turned into 126 loft-style housing units with an 11-story hotel next door.
- Middleton-based NCG Hospitality has ended its agreement with Missouri developer Drury Southwest as they were unable to agree on terms. So the downtown hole-in-the-ground eyesore isn’t going anywhere any time soon. [IB Madison]
