📚 Library card life hacks in Madison
September 11, 2024 · —Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! You may know that you can use your library card to check out books. (Okay, you almost certainly already knew that.) But did you know that you could use that little orange marvel to grow a garden, get across town or digitize family photos? On the City Cast Madison pod today, Bianca Martin talks to Tana Elias from the Madison Public Library for some library card life hacks.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚌 School Buses Have Smoother Start
- A week into the school year, Madison’s school bus issues from last year don’t seem to be repeating. A shortage of drivers resulted in some late buses, with some kids waiting over an hour for their bus to arrive.
- District officials said about 73% of buses arrived on time Wednesday, the first full day of school, and about 91% were on time Tuesday.
- School officials changed start and end times to require fewer drivers during the day. One consequence is that middle school students arrive later than before and do not have crossing guards at their schools, which has frustrated and worried some parents. [WSJ, Cap Times]
💸 Goodman Center Under Financial Investigation
- The Goodman Community Center announced the 70-year-old nonprofit is under investigation by the Madison Police Department after the center discovered “financial inconsistencies and impropriety.”
- President and executive director Letesha Nelson told supporters in an email that Goodman discovered the issues, turned the matter over to police and is fully cooperating with the investigations.[Cap Times]
🎸 Joey’s Song Becomes Four-Day Festival
- You’ve heard of Burning Man? Now meet The Freezing Man Festival. That’s the new four-day music festival that the benefit concert series Joey’s Song is expanding to become this winter.
- Freezing Man will run Jan. 8-11 at The Sylvee and the Majestic Theatre, and will feature an all-star line-up of musicians, including Butch Vig of Garbage and members of Cheap Trick, Portugal. The Man., Silversun Pickups, and more.
- The Joey’s Song concert series was founded by Sun Prairie resident Mike Gomoll to raise money to support research and treatment for seizure disorders. Gomoll’s son Joseph died in 2010 just before his fifth birthday from a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet’s syndrome. [WSJ, Joey’s Song]

Where Is It?

⬆️ Last week’s answer
This cow can be found at Graze on the Capitol Square!
🎉Congratulations to Addy B. for being the first to guess correctly.

⬇️ This week’s clues
Where do you think this week’s photo was taken? A few clues:
- The Fess Hotel operated for 125 years and had an icehouse and a 60-horse stable for guests. (That’s not really any help, I just think it’s interesting to know.)
- This sign was recently unearthed in 2020 when a parking structure next to it was torn down.
- It shares a wall with a popular restaurant that has multiple locations in Madison.

Some Madison artists are coming together to celebrate the little robotic rascals at a “Friday the Furbeenth” art show from 6-10 p.m. Friday at Common Wealth Gallery, 100 S. Baldwin St. It’s gonna be weird, so as Furby might say, “u-nye-loo-lay-doo? (“Do you want to play?”)
