🍁 Your guide to Madison’s fall arts scene
September 18, 2024 · —Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! Fall is nearly here and so is the fall arts season, whether it’s new shows at Overture Hall to celebrate its 20th anniversary, programming for kids at MyARTS, and cool events at Arts + Literature Laboratory. On the City Cast Madison podcast today, Cap Times arts writer Lindsay Christians got through as many of the big events in Madison this autumn as she possibly could.

What's CITY Talking About?

👩🎓 UW-Madison Sees Record Enrollment
- If you think you’ve seen a lot of UW-Madison students out and about since the semester began, you’re right! UW-Madison's enrollment this year grew to 51,729, breaking last year's record of 50,622.
- Overall, the UW System enrolled 163,589 students, the highest total since before the pandemic.
- But growth in the student population was affected by the closing of branch campuses, such as UW-Platteville’s Richland Center campus. [Channel 3000, WPR]
🗳 The Political Ads Keep On Coming
- Think you’ve seen a lot of political ads on TV this campaign season? You’re also right! The Wesleyan Median Project released data that both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris each spent over $1 million on campaign ads in the Madison market this summer.
- And they’re not done. The Harris team confirmed Thursday that the campaign rolled out a suite of new ads featuring segments of last week’s debate. And Harris herself will be at a rally in Madison on Friday. [Cap Times, WMTV]
💰 School Board Approves Raises For Teachers
- The MMSD school board unanimously approved an agreement between the district and Madison Teachers Inc. to increase staff wages for the 2024-25 contract year.
- Under the agreement, staff will receive a guaranteed 2.06% increase in base wages. If the district’s operations referendum on the Nov. 5 ballot is approved by voters, staff will receive a second 2.06% increase.
- Together, the 4.12% increase would be the maximum allowed by state law. Both would be retroactive to July 1. [Madison 365, Isthmus]

⬇️ This week’s clues
Where do you think this week’s photo was taken? A few clues:
- If you type any of these street names into your GPS, it will be very confused.
- This “intersection” is located near the Capitol Square.
- If you have young children, you probably didn’t need any of these clues.

📰 Extra! Extra! The City of Madison now has the only two electric trash collection trucks in Wisconsin! Now the trucks just need names. So the city has put the call out for suggestions for what to name the trucks. Names should be family-friendly and light-hearted, puns are encouraged. Email [email protected] with your idea of a name for either or both trucks. (As a fan of the films of Wong Kar Wai, I’m going with “Junking Express.”) 🚚
