What's CITY Talking About?

🗳️Clerk’s Office Correcting Duplicate Ballots
- About 2,000 voters accidentally received duplicate absentee ballots due to a data processing error, the Madison City’s Clerk’s office announced.
- The error was quickly identified and corrected. Each voter was contacted, told of the error, and reminded to submit only one ballot and destroy the other one.
- Because the duplicate ballots have identical barcodes, once one is submitted, the other one would not be counted. In addition, once a voter submits a ballot, it’s marked in the poll book, meaning a second one would not be counted. [City of Madison]
🏗️ Developers Break Ground on Controversial Sherman Ave. Apartment
- Vermilion Development broke ground Monday on a $96 million multi-family development, Lane Lock Apartments, located on Sherman Avenue near Tenney Park.
- Two of the three buildings in the development are five stories tall, and some nearby residents complained to city officials that the buildings were intrusive to the park.
- The apartments will be located on the former site of the Filene House, which was razed as part of the development. [Cap Times]
🫁 Former ‘Redlined’ Areas Linked to Asthma
- Children who grow up in neighborhoods that were graded low for home loans, or “redlined,” have a slightly higher risk of asthma, according to a study involving UW-Madison researchers.
- The study looked at 4,800 children across seven cities, including Madison, and found that health disparities today may be rooted in racial discrimination of the federal government’s redlining system of nearly a century ago, the researchers said. Redlining was outlawed in 1968. [WSJ]

📰 Extra! Extra! Some people look at a tin of canned meat and think of lunch. Others think of art. At least a few sculptors on Madison’s north side do. For 30 years, one artist has hosted a SPAM-carving contest out of his garage, where dozens of sculptors come to carve the jiggly pink meat into artistic creations. (That might be preferable to actually eating it.)
