Good morning, Madison! The weather may have been unexpectedly summer-y this past week, but don’t be fooled – it’s fall. Madison Streets will start its leaf and yard waste collection the week of Oct. 6, and is hoping for three pickups during the fall. To find out when you should put your leaves and waste out, put your address into the city’s online tool.🍁

What's CITY Talking About?

🚴 Art Promotes Harmony On the Bike Path
- Runners, bikers and strollers on the paths on Atwood Ave. near Olbrich Park will notice some new artwork installed directly in the pavement. The medallions encourage all users of the paths to share the space, with messages like “Take Care, Be Aware” and “Slow Down For Others.”
- The artwork was designed by Madison artist Daniella Echevarria, and resembles art she created in 2020 for bike paths and bus stops to encourage social distancing during the pandemic.
- The medallions are several feet in diameter and made out of the same material used for the Progress flag design at the top of State Street, which is resistant to spray paint. [City of Madison]
🎓Students Face Discipline Over Protest Encampment
- Two UW-Madison students face disciplinary hearings over their involvement in the student encampment on the campus last spring in protest of the war in Gaza.
- The students, Dahlia Saba and Vignesh Ramachandran, face charges for allegedly “planning and carrying out an encampment on university lands.” The students say the basis of the charges stem from an op-ed they wrote in the Cap Times in May criticizing the university.
- The legal organization Palestine Legal has said the case violates First Amendment rights and has asked the university to drop the case. [Madison365, Cap Times]
👔 Nonprofit Helps Transgender Women Further Careers
- A new local organization, the OPEN Foundation, is aiming to help provide networking opportunities and one-on-one career support for transgender women and transfeminine nonbinary individuals in Madison.
- The foundation, an offshoot of the Out Professional Engagement Network, which supports LGBTQ+ professionals will focus on unemployed and underemployed residents.
- OPEN will hold a free career fair on Thursday at Monona Terrace Convention Center, where prospective employees can have their resumes reviewed and even select second-hand business attire for themselves. [Cap Times]
