🚌 Hop on the bus with City Cast Madison!
October 2, 2024 · —Rob Thomas
Good morning, Madison! Have you taken a ride on the new bus rapid transit route yet? Our intrepid City Cast Madison crew took our microphones onto the bus recently to talk to fellow riders and document the experience. Listen to the wheels on the bus go round and round on today’s episode!

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ Backlog Grows in Dane County Felony Cases
- Defendants and victims in Dane County are typically waiting over nine months for their felony cases to get resolved, according to a Cap Times analysis of court reports.
- While the court has made progress on a backlog of cases that built up during the pandemic, local and state officials say the extended wait times are due to understaffing, complexity of cases, crime lab slowdowns, and added requirements by a recent victim’s rights law.
- The slowdown means that crime victims have to wait extra long for resolution, and defendants are waiting in jail longer for trail. Lengthy delays can also weaken evidence and witness testimony. [Cap Times]
🎟️ Students Navigate Risky Resale Sites For Tickets
- With the UW-Madison’s ticket lottery system for students leaving many empty-handed for sold-out Badgers games, third-party resale sites are becoming an increasingly popular – and risky way – to find tickets.
- Buyers and sellers communicate on message boards on sites like Facebook. Money is exchanged between peer-to-peer platforms like CashApp or Venmo, with no promise of security for those transactions.
- Some students have sent money to alleged buyers and never received tickets. “I have nobody to blame but myself,” one student said after sending $100 and receiving nothing back. [Badger Herald]
🗳️ How Madison Ensures Duplicate Ballots Aren’t Counted
- After the Madison City Clerk’s office erroneously sent out duplicate ballots to 2,000 voters, City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl wrote a letter to voters explaining how her office is ensuring that the duplicate ballots won’t be counted.
- The clerk’s office asked voters to destroy the extra ballot, but has multiple safeguards in place, such as barcodes, to ensure it’s not counted. "Election procedures include checks and balances to ensure that only one ballot can be counted for each voter," Witzel-Behl wrote.
