What's CITY Talking About?

🏬 These Four Stores Are Replacing Hilldale’s Movie Theater
- Hilldale will open four new businesses in the space formerly occupied by the AMC Madison 6 movie theater, the shopping center announced.
- The four businesses are the eyeglasses store Warby Parker, the men’s clothing store Jaxen Gray, the makeup retailer Sephora, and the fast-casual salad/grain bowl restaurant Sweetgreen.
- Warby Parker will be moving from its State Street location and will open at Hilldale by the end of 2024, with the other three following in 2025. [WMTV]
💰 Mayor Unveils Dueling Budget Proposals
- Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway unveiled two versions of her 2025 operating budget Tuesday – one that depends on a $22 million referendum passing in November, and one if that referendum fails.
- Either way, Madison taxpayers may be paying more. According to estimates, if the referendum passes, the owner of a $457,000 home may pay $313 in additional taxes. If it fails, that same homeowner may pay an extra $83.
- Rhodes-Conway urged voters to approve the referendum to avoid deeper cuts to city services, including library hours and brush collection. [City of Madison, Cap Times]
🍶 Late-Night Japanese Restaurant To Open on State Street
- Izakaya Kuroyama, a Japanese restaurant and bar, will open on State Street in the spot formerly occupied by Dubai Restaurant & Bar.
- Hugo Leung, who owns two Chicago restaurants, plans to open the restaurant at 419 State St. by mid-December. Izakaya Kuroyama will serve Japanese street food, craft cocktails, beer, and sake, and will be open until 2 a.m. [🔒WSJ]
