  • Wednesday, Oct. 16 is the last day to register to vote online and by mail in Wisconsin for the Nov. 5 election. Voters can still register in person at their municipal clerk’s office during regular business hours until 5 p.m. Nov. 1, and in person on Election Day at their polling location.

šŸ§‘ā€āš•ļø Free Clinic Needs More Volunteer Doctors

  • A free clinic on Madison’s south side said it’s short on volunteer doctors at a time when patient demand is high. Specialty Care Free Clinic said the shortage has resulted in six-month waits for some patients and no available appointments at all for others.
  • A nationwide shortage of doctors is causing burnout among active providers, and prompting newly retired doctors to say they need a break instead of volunteering.
  • The clinic is looking for doctors, physician assistants or nurse practitioners, currently working or actively retired, willing to volunteer for even a half-day shift once a month. Because a majority of the patients are Spanish speakers, interpreters are also needed. [šŸ”’WSJ, Specialty Care Free Clinic]

šŸ˜‹ Los Dos Cuates Opens in Waunakee

  • Two Nicaraguan brothers have opened Los Dos Cuates, a new restaurant in Waunakee that offers specialties from their childhood, like enchiladas, yuca with pork, and beef in jalapeno sauce.
  • Of special interest to fish fry lovers in Wisconsin is the Nicaraguan fried foods known as ā€œfritanga.ā€ The restaurant also offers flavors of agua fresca that might be unfamiliar to diners, such dragon fruit and passion fruit. [Cap Times]

Do you know where these tentacles are? And are they even tentacles? (Rob Thomas/Madison Minutes)

ā¬†ļø Last Week’s Photo

Last week’s photo was a toughie! Only 10 people correctly identified this colorful sculpture as being on the Cannonball Bike Path near Aldo Leopold Elementary School!

šŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Jill W. for being the first person to guess correctly! And extra credit to Sheila L., who did not guess where this was, but suggested the sculpture may not be tentacles, but ā€œunfurling fern frondsā€!

Where is this welcoming sign? (Hayley Sperling/Madison Minutes)

Where do you think this sign is located? A few clues:

  • It’s located on Madison’s north side.
  • It’s at a location shared by several businesses.
  • Some of its actual ā€œneighborsā€ include the Tip Top Tavern and Ogden’s North Street Diner.
